About The Position

This Position is ONLY Open to Montgomery County Government Employees. This is an internal 'only' job posting, available to current Montgomery County Government Department of Transportation employees. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is seeking an Equipment Operator III for the Division of Highway Services (DHS). The Equipment Operator III will be responsible for operating vehicles or wheeled/crawler type construction and maintenance equipment, including but not limited to a multi-purpose excavating machine (Gradall), tractor-trailer truck, concrete mobile truck, performing driver/operator preventative maintenance tasks, and performing manual labor tasks at job sites when not operating assigned equipment. Employees may also instruct less skilled employees in the operation of vehicles/equipment. Overtime is required during snow removal, storms (wind/rain, ice), leafing operations, and other emergencies.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience operating equipment equivalent to that listed in the Equipment Operator II class specification.
  • Ability to read and write in English and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class A (or equivalent) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) from the applicant’s state of residence, with endorsements, or possession of same within six months of appointment/promotion to the position.
  • Completion of a pre-employment Medical History Form and a drug screening to assess your ability to safely perform the essential duties of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and performs federally mandated, manufacturer-recommended and other driver-level general inspections and preventive maintenance tasks on one or more of the following pieces of equipment: tractor trailer with Demo trailer and Low Boy attachments; 3-5 cubic yard track-driven backhoe excavator; G-3 and 4100 series Gradalls; track-driven D-3 and higher rental dozers or equivalent; 10,000-gallon fuel trucks; 45,000-65,000 GVW tandem wheeled dump trucks; 50,000 70,000 GVW tri-axle dump trucks; 47,000 GVW 4x4 dump trucks; 26,000-35,000 GVW dump trucks; 55,000 GVW log truck with crane; 45,000 GVW asphalt distributor; 45,000 GVW asphalt pothole patch truck; catch basin cleaner-flusher truck; asphalt distributor (towed); 1 to 3 cubic yard front end loaders; 3-5 cubic yard front end loaders; 1½-2 cubic yard backhoe; 6–10-ton steel wheeled roller; 4-6 ton vibratory and non-vibratory rollers; skid loaders with attachments (including but not limited to the backhoe, sweeper and paving profiler); pavement saw, tractor mowers, box pavers; full-size asphalt paver; woodchippers; Motor Grader G-12 or 120H series; aerial bucket truck; and other types/makes of equipment.
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor work as an integral member of a crew; this includes use of power saws, chainsaws, plate tampers, cutting torches & welders, power pole saws, concrete-finishing tools, etc.
  • Participates in snow removal operations and leafing operations as a driver and a laborer, as needed.
  • Participates in seasonal activities including snow and ice removal, including making and applying salt brine, safely installing and operating the blade attachment, and calibrating and effectively functioning all aspects of the abrasive’s distributor and Leaf Vacuuming Program including inspecting the “leafer” for operational soundness and transporting the “leafer".
  • Operates an acetylene torch to cut various steel shapes.
  • Fabricates metal for various construction, maintenance and repair activities.
  • Welds railings, sign brackets, etc.
  • Responds to and addresses a variety of weather-related, emergencies, or similar issues, such as downed trees, clogged storm drains, accidents, and similar urgent situations.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Benefits

  • The salary range above represents the earning potential for this position. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $61,604 to $96,047.50 , based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
