About The Position

Under supervision, performs a variety of duties associated with the operation of trucks and medium equipment and the repair, maintenance, and construction of County roads, bridges, and right-of-ways. May operate medium and some heavy equipment incidental to the work.

Requirements

Knowledge of and the skill to operate and service assigned vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of road construction and maintenance, materials, and methods, and appropriate safety practices.
Knowledge of State traffic laws.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to prepare and maintain routine records.
Ability to perform heavy physical labor under a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, and the public.
Ability to perform moderate and some heavy physical work and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds.
Ability to stand, walk, sit, ride, climb, bend, kneel, twist, reach, grasp, push, pull and perform similar body movements.
Possesses hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to operate office equipment, including a computer, a vehicle, and heavy equipment.
Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone, and two-way radio; ability to hear malfunction of equipment.
Ability to see and read instructions, manuals, and characters on a computer screen; ability to see and detect unacceptable materials.
High school diploma or GED.
Two years of experience in the operation of trucks and related automotive equipment.
Must possess a valid CDL driver's license.

May operate heavier equipment such as a backhoe, asphalt distributor, loader or road grader.

Responsibilities

Operates single and double axle trucks, loaders, and tractor-trailers to construct, repair, and maintain County roads and to haul equipment to job sites.
Drives trucks to haul sand, gravel, culverts, and asphalt mix for road repair or to remove dirt, trash, snow, and other materials for disposal.
Operates trucks with snowplow blades to plow snow and sand roads as needed.
Sweeps bridges, rocks up wing walls, mixes and pours concrete.
Monitors the condition of assigned equipment to ensure proper care, service, lubrication, and repairs.
Services, maintains, and makes major and minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on equipment, including checking and servicing fuel, oil, and coolant levels, lubrication, tire pressure and changes, and general appearance.
May operate heavier equipment such as a backhoe, asphalt distributor, loader, or road grader.
May perform welding on an occasional basis or as assigned.
Performs a variety of other duties related to road maintenance, such as patching roadways, installing, erecting, or replacing roadway signs, cleaning and removing debris from culverts, backfilling road washes, and trimming and removing trees and brush.
Maintains records on operation of work accomplished and equipment operated.
May lead other workers.
Responds to after-hours calls.
Performs other duties as assigned.
