Requirements

  • Knowledge of safe operating methods, practices, and rules applicable to Town-owned or leased equipment.
  • Understanding of practices and procedures related to: Asphalt roadways, Municipal concrete programs, Storm drainage, Traffic lights and control devices, Street sweeping, Automated garbage collection, Snow and ice control.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with the ability to support, guide, and mentor team members in the field.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess onsite issues and determine effective solutions with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Mechanical aptitude and effective troubleshooting abilities.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related equipment operation experience.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Valid Class 3Q Alberta Driver’s License (required).
  • Ability to obtain: Standard First Aid with CPR Level C, WHMIS certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Class 1Q Alberta Driver’s License (asset).
  • Training in the following considered an asset: Heavy Equipment Operation, Road Construction and Maintenance, Team Leadership, Ground Disturbance, Fall Arrest, Aerial & Scissor Lift Safety, Load Securement, Flag Person Training.

Responsibilities

  • Safely and competently operate a variety of equipment, including but not limited to: Skid steers, Rollers, Pathway Snow Clearing Tractors, Tandem Trucks, Front End Loaders, Bucket Truck, Automated Garbage Truck, Hook/Plow Trucks, Hydrovac (Swamper role).
  • Perform basic maintenance applicable to equipment used in this position.
  • Follow equipment maintenance programs, procedures, and schedules established by the Town.
  • Provide leadership on work sites by guiding staff, promoting safe work practices, and assisting with task coordination as required.
  • Identify operational issues or site challenges and take initiative to determine safe, timely, and practical solutions with minimal supervision.
  • Train subordinate staff when required.
  • May be required to oversee subordinate staff and/or tasks related to this position’s responsibilities.
  • Maintain accurate and clear reports and documentation.
  • Ensure all assigned duties, whether written or verbal, are completed safely, efficiently, and to Town standards.
  • Participate in the response schedule as required.
  • Participate in the OnCall rotation.
  • May be required to work shift work and/or weekends.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
