About The Position

The City of Wilmington is seeking dependable individuals to join their Equipment Operator II team, focusing on landscape maintenance. This role involves working outdoors in small crews, operating specialized equipment to maintain city streams and public spaces. Employees will gain valuable trade skills, with opportunities for CDL, CPR/First Aid certifications, heavy equipment training, and cross-training. The primary responsibility is to maintain and improve the City’s vegetation associated with stormwater easements by operating equipment on roadsides, in street rights-of-way, and on private property easements. This is the second level in the Equipment Operator series, involving more complex operations and larger vehicles than entry-level positions, requiring greater dexterity and skill in confined spaces. Duties also include assisting crew members, equipment maintenance, and completing daily logs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Vocational or technical training in the operation of CDL-operated vehicles.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in construction, maintenance, grounds keeping, or a related field.
  • Minimum of one year of experience operating the types of equipment identified in this class.
  • Valid Driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain Class B within 90 days of hire.
  • Knowledge of the basic operation and maintenance requirements of the equipment operated by this classification.
  • Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues, City leadership, and the general public.
  • Ability to obtain Flagger & WorkZone Safety certifications within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and handle practical situations and requests made by supervisor and/or lead workers.
  • Ability to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directives and perform the relative tasks using sound judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs construction repairs and maintenance on drainage systems, including pipes, catch basins, manholes, open channels, creeks, ditches, and ponds.
  • Operates equipment for pipe installation/repair, drainage structures, debris removal, vegetation management, and ditch cleaning.
  • Identifies equipment needs for assigned projects, transports equipment to/from work sites, and inspects equipment before and after use.
  • Operates a backhoe for digging, trenching, and clearing land or materials for maintenance, repair, and construction projects, considering property impact and utility lines.
  • Operates tractors with articulated boom mowing systems for rights-of-way and difficult-to-access areas, removing obstacles and adjusting settings for optimal operation.
  • Maintains records and logs of work performed and completes basic preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Assists crews with manual labor, including digging, shoveling, raking, spreading, compacting, and leveling materials when not operating equipment.
  • Retrieves supplies, materials, tools, and equipment, and runs errands as needed.
  • Collects, transports, loads, and unloads materials, supplies, tools, and equipment to and from worksites.
  • Follows established safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and wears protective gear.
  • Monitors traffic around trucks and equipment, flags and directs traffic, and places markers, signs, and cones to ensure safety.
  • Reports incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.
  • Provides operational support for storm preparation and cleanup.
  • Builds and sets up traffic barriers for special events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
