About The Position

As a Lyon County Equipment Operator I, you will maintain, repair, and install culverts of Lyon County in addition to other duties as assigned. You will operate numerous types of construction equipment and vehicles and be responsible for the proper care, inspections, and pre-operation maintenance of the equipment. This position will involve occasionally responding to call-outs potentially at all hours, nights and weekends. Must be willing and capable of working in extreme weather conditions. The equipment operator I position requires a moderate level of problem solving, decision making, and people skills to efficiently and effectively maintain multiple equipment and roadway concerns. Other duties as assigned. Non-exempt position with a solid base pay of $21.50/hr. and benefits including: paid time off (accounts credited at 10 hours vacation and 8 hours sick per month worked), vendor discounts, health, dental and vision insurance and much more! We equip and promote exceptional employees! JOB SUMMARY: This is a non-exempt position involving operation of medium and heavy maintenance and construction equipment. It also involves perfor­mance of semi-skilled manual tasks. The roles, responsibilities, job functions, knowledge, skills, and abilities set forth herein may be revised from time-to-time in order to comply with federal and state laws, departmental needs and the changing requirements for this position.

Requirements

  • Must possess a Class B (Class A preferred) Kansas Commercial Driver's License
  • High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent required.
  • Must be able to receive, interpret and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Required to read, write, and speak English fluently, with the ability to speak a foreign language helpful.
  • Requires sufficient hearing level to be able to deal with people and communicate with others directly or by telephone.
  • Requires sufficient visual acuity to read and write and operate equipment.
  • Employees position requires successful completion of pre-employment background, physical, drug screen, work screen and polygraph examinations and participates in the random drug and alcohol screening program.
  • Subject to criminal record history checks, physical examination, and drug/alcohol screening prior to employment.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of satisfactory operation of road and construction equipment desired.
  • Additional equipment operation training or education such as technical or vocational school degree desirable.
  • Equivalent combination of training and/or experience for heavy equipment operation accepted.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, machines and tools, including their uses, repair and maintenance is desired.
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness Level Certificate preferred.
  • Additional equipment operation training desired.

  • Perform inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and assist in the servicing and repair of the same.
  • Observe roads, bridges, culverts, ditches and road signs for maintenance needs and report problems to their supervisor.
  • Control traffic passing near, in, or around work zones.
  • Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects.
  • Turn in daily time sheets and mileage logs as required.
  • Locate underground services, such as pipes or wires, prior to beginning work.
  • Operate machinery in a manner that does not cause undue wear and tear to machinery or property.
  • Operate motor graders, dozers, scrapers, cranes, snowplows, backhoes, loaders and other equipment for all phases of construction and main­tenance projects.
  • Load and unload materials, machinery, and supplies.
  • Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
  • Maintain and keep machinery in good repair. Lubricate, clean, maintain or repair machinery, equipment, or tools.
  • Operate machines to spread, smooth, level, of stone, concrete, or asphalt on roadbeds.
  • Observe distribution of paving material to adjust machine settings or material flow and indicate low spots for workers to add material.
  • Light burners or start heating units of machines and regulate screed temperatures and asphalt flow rates.
  • Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair equipment, or report malfunctions to supervisors.
  • Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment.
  • Inspect equipment to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • Inspect equipment or tools to be used in construction, maintenance or excavation.
  • Install equipment attachments or components.
  • Adjust handwheels and depress pedals to control attachments, such as blades, buckets, scrapers, or swing booms.
  • Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.
  • Look, listen, feel, and smell to detect any problems with the equipment you are operating.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • May be required to attend seminars or training sessions.
