About The Position

The Town of High River is seeking two Equipment Operators I for a full-time temporary, 6-month position within the Public Works / Roads department. This role is responsible for the safe and skilled operation of equipment owned or leased by the Town, with knowledge of road, solid waste, and recycling operations. The position requires performing a variety of duties and tasks associated with the role, aligning with the organization's ACE (Accountable, Connected, Excellence) workplace culture. The incumbent must take ownership, communicate clearly, contribute to team results, provide exceptional service, and demonstrate initiative. This role is crucial for maintaining town infrastructure and services.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, and rules of the safe operation of Town owned and leased equipment applicable to this position.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance in the area of Public Works, Waste and Recycling, and/or in the area of Utilities.
  • Ability to work independently or within a team.
  • Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • 3 years of related experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work.
  • Grade 12 or GED.
  • Valid Class 3Q Alberta Driver’s License.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
  • WHMIS certification.
  • Ability to obtain Standard First Aid with CPR Level C.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge in the operation and maintenance in the area of Utilities: Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection and Storm Sewer systems.
  • Class 1 Alberta Driver’s License.
  • Formal training in Heavy Equipment Operation, Road Construction and Maintenance, Underground Utilities, Flag Person, and Team Leadership.
  • H2S training.
  • Confined Spaces training.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment including single axle and tandem axle dump trucks, manual garbage trucks or recycling trucks, and packers.
  • Perform basic maintenance on applicable equipment.
  • Follow maintenance programs, procedures, and schedules.
  • Train other subordinate staff.
  • Oversee other subordinate staff and/or tasks.
  • Keep clear and accurate reports.
  • Carry out instructed duties efficiently and safely.
  • Participate in the emergency “on-call” list.
  • Work shift work and/or weekends as required.
  • Work in all weather conditions.
  • Perform any assigned tasks.
  • Carry out maintenance on town infrastructure.
