About The Position

The City of Springfield is seeking applicants for the position of Equipment Operator I in the Office of Public Works, specifically within the Oak Ridge Cemetery division. This role involves maintaining cemetery facilities, grounds, sidewalks, roads, and equipment. Responsibilities include operating large tractors and mowers for grounds maintenance, pruning trees and shrubs, removing dead vegetation and stumps using heavy equipment, and managing leaves and debris. The position also entails planting and maintaining various flora, assisting with burial site preparations (opening graves, setting up for services, closing graves), and preparing crypts and niches for entombments and inurnments. Additionally, the role involves digging, forming, and pouring footings for marker foundations, as well as setting, realigning, and resetting markers.

Requirements

  • Knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
  • Previous experience in the operation of maintenance equipment preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Class D driver's license.
  • Current City employees must have completed their probationary period and attained certified status in their current position.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain cemetery facilities, grounds, sidewalks, roads, and equipment.
  • Mow grounds with large tractors and mowers.
  • Prune trees and trim shrubs.
  • Remove dead trees, limbs, and shrubs and remove stumps with backhoe or other heavy equipment.
  • Rake, blow, and remove leaves and plant matter and pick up debris.
  • Plant and maintain flowers, bushes, trees, and turf.
  • Assist in preparing burial sites for interments by opening graves, removing excess dirt, cleaning site, and setting up area for graveside service including tent and chairs as needed.
  • Assist in closing graves by filling, tamping, seeding, and cleaning grave sites.
  • Assist in preparing crypts for entombments and niches for inurnments by removing front marble and concrete slabs using mausoleum lift when needed, sweeping out crypts or niches, placing caskets in crypt or urn in niche, sealing concrete slabs and replaces marble fronts, and setting up area for service.
  • Dig, construct forms, and pour footings for marker foundations.
  • Set, realign and reset markers.
