About The Position

The Pima County Department of Transportation has multiple openings for an Equipment Operator I. As an Equipment Operator I, you will be will required to operate light equipment such as pickups, small loaders, water trucks, or other assigned machinery. Perform manual labor including shoveling, lifting, debris removal, and site cleanup. Assist higher-level operators and crew members with daily assignments. Conduct basic equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety issues. Follow all safety policies, procedures, and traffic control guidelines. Support roadway, drainage, or facility maintenance activities as assigned. Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized condition. Complete work orders, service requests, or reports as required. Respond to emergency or after-hours callouts when needed. Operates a variety of equipment to rough construction specifications used in public works construction and maintenance such as roads, parks, drainage ways, and wastewater systems; Operates a variety of equipment such as street sweepers, water trucks, asphaltic materials distributors, front end loaders, graders, bulldozers, backhoes, boom trucks, tree spades, trenchers, tankers, semi tractors, belly dumps, scrapers, snow removal equipment, cranes, drag lines, rollers, striping equipment, pavement marking equipment and various other equipment; Hauls materials using semi-tractors, trailers, and various trucks; Loads, secures, and transports equipment on transport trailers; Blade-mixes and lays bituminous road mix or asphaltic concrete; Performs minor equipment repairs and servicing; Participates in a variety of manual labor tasks.

Requirements

  • Minimum two years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment/vehicles, which may include street sweepers, water trucks, asphaltic materials distributors, front end loaders, graders/scrapers, bulldozers, backhoes, trenchers, tractors, tractor/semi-trailer combinations and like equipment.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • Must have valid driver license and clean driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a vocational/technical program from an accredited college or technical school in heavy equipment operations may be substituted for six months of the required experience.
  • Minimum six (6) months of entry level construction experience.
  • Experience with/knowledge of roadway maintenance.
  • Experience with/knowledge of OSHA safety practices.
  • Commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement.
