About The Position

The purpose of this position is to be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of brick maintenance and equipment, light and heavy vehicles on assigned projects or activities of a public works nature. The position requires manual labor, which will be completed alone or as part of a crew. You will perform various manual tasks and activities, i.e., eliminate hazardous conditions, prevent interference with traffic, traffic signals, traffic signs, and underground utility lines, and clean and service equipment, vehicles, tools, and work area. Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials, and equipment. Observe and follow safety procedures and precautions at work sites. Work will be reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observations, reports, and results obtained, delivery of services. This position is designated among essential personnel and requires reporting to work during all significant weather events or emergencies.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in tree and shrub care and maintenance.
  • Ability to safely operate light tree maintenance and tree vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of how to safely operate, but not limited to, saws, 1- or 2-ton trucks, off-road vehicles.
  • Ability to adhere to the personal protective equipment (PPE) policy and maintain individually provided PPE in a functional condition.
  • All uniforms and PPE should be clean and equipped when scheduled to work.
  • Attend shifts in accordance with company policy.
  • This position is subject to respond to emergencies after normal working hours.
  • Occasional overtime required.
  • Ability to be flexible with last minute schedule changes, location changes, time of shift change.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and officials, representatives of outside agencies, and general public.
  • Both verbal and written communication, including conveying and following instructions and providing information to the public.
  • Understand and follow instruction and communicate effectively, as required.
  • Knowledge and adherence to all applicable State and Federal laws, local ordinances, City and Departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge and adherence to the Texas Motor Vehicle Code and other codes, laws, and statutes relating to the given position.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Suite, Database management, and web applications.
  • Endeavor to continuously improve the services provided to the citizens of Tyler.
  • Ability to twist and kneel up to 6 hours daily.
  • Ability to bend, turn, climb, crouch, and crawl up to 2 hours daily.
  • Ability to stoop up to 3 hours daily.
  • Ability to walk, sit, and stand up to 4 hours daily.
  • Ability to grasp objects up to 8 hours daily.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80-lbs.
  • Ability to push or pull up to 20-lbs.
  • May be exposed to vehicular traffic and must follow all maintenance of traffic (MOT) procedures.
  • All staff will be called to SERVE during storms, catastrophes, emergencies, or as otherwise needed.
  • Physical ability to work under temperature extremes and for extended hours of time.
  • Working within confined spaces can be necessary for some tasks.
  • Working in the proximity of light and heavy machinery.
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must have two (2) years of experience in manual labor.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, or training that has prepared the incumbent to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Advanced knowledge of the methods of removing and trimming trees.
  • Must be able to operate a one-ton flatbed truck or chainsaw.
  • Must have a valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License with good driving record throughout the length of employment.
  • Must have a strong work ethic and be able to manage time to effectively meet deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • A valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate light trucks and tree maintenance equipment, including drive bucket trucks (not operating the bucket) and chippers.
  • Operate hand tools, chain saws, pole saws, sharpening tools, and hand tools.
  • Maintain a safe work area by placing and removing cones, barricades, and warning devices.
  • Direct traffic at work sites to ensure the safety of the work crew and public.
  • Clean up work sites upon completion of jobs, picking up all tools and equipment.
  • Secure the job site if returning later.
  • Wash vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Clean up shop areas.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe and operable conditions.
  • Safely use, mix, and dilute all chemicals according to direction labels.
  • Observe safe driving principles and practices when operating motor vehicles.
  • Endeavor to continuously improve the services provided to the citizens of Tyler.
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed.
  • Perform other duties and functions as assigned, required, or directed, necessary, readily apparent, or related to other duties and responsibilities.

Benefits

  • The City of Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description.
  • Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate’s Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.
