About The Position

Assiniboine Park Conservancy (APC) is seeking one (1) Equipment Operator 2 for a 6-month term position. This role is responsible for the day-to-day operation of equipment to ensure APC grounds are maintained to the highest quality standards and aesthetics according to APC’s master plan. The incumbent will perform skilled grounds and equipment operation work in the maintenance of all turf areas, including lawns, meadows, pastures, animal habitats, and green roofs with a diverse collection of plant material. Responsibilities include snow removal, skimming ponds, sweeping up debris, keeping the ground free of litter, removal of manure and bedding, and performing related duties as required. The incumbent may be required to work with other horticulture, Leaf, and zoo teams to ensure lawns are mowed, hedges are trimmed, trees and shrubs are pruned, and materials are distributed across the park. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting equipment inspections; documenting and tracking equipment utilization; identifying and reporting mechanical issues and problems; performing hands-on duties related to troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of specific APC equipment; and scheduling, coordinating, and/or conducting routine maintenance and equipment repairs with external vendors. The incumbent may also be responsible for project management of small to medium-sized construction projects as directed.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and/or GED equivalent.
  • Demonstrated good knowledge of small and large grounds maintenance equipment.
  • A minimum of 4 years performing equipment operator 1 work or the equivalent of 4 years’ experience using a variety of landscape, earth, and snow moving equipment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency operating and maintaining medium equipment such as skid steers, loaders, bobcats, backhoes, commercial lawnmowers and other equipment.
  • Proven ability in hooking up, loading and unloading, driving and backing up with a trailer.
  • Competency in reading technical manuals and conducting routine medium equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for the operation of small engine machines, equipment and tools.
  • Confidence and knowledge in the use of hand and power gardening tools.
  • Knowledge of turf maintenance practices and snow clearing techniques.
  • A valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Intermediate technology and computer skills.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Manitoba Pesticide Applicators License.

  • A combination of work experience, education and additional medium duty equipment certification/courses may be considered.
