About The Position

The Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a wide variety of heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, and specialized machinery used in disaster response and environmental operations. This position plays a critical role in ensuring fleet reliability, minimizing downtime, and supporting safe and efficient field operations. Success in this role requires strong mechanical aptitude, advanced troubleshooting skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently in both shop and field environments. This position does not typically supervise employees but serves as a technical resource for equipment maintenance and repair activities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment, heavy-duty vehicles, construction equipment, or related machinery.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, electrical systems, and mechanical components.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues across multiple equipment platforms.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, safety procedures, schematics, and repair instructions.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds regularly and heavier items with assistance or mechanical lifting devices.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to work underneath, on top of, and around heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and lifting devices safely.
  • Willingness to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, and other safety gear.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, elevated locations, noisy environments, and around moving mechanical equipment.
  • Commitment to following all company safety standards and procedures.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Hydraulic troubleshooting and repair experience.
  • Experience with CAT, John Deere, Komatsu, Vermeer, Altec, or similar heavy equipment manufacturers.
  • CDL License.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • ASE, OEM, or related mechanical certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, diesel and gasoline engines, and specialized machinery.
  • Read work orders, inspect equipment performance, and identify mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic malfunctions.
  • Disassemble, repair, rebuild, and reassemble engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brake systems, and other major equipment components.
  • Perform preventative maintenance services to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot complex equipment failures and determine root causes to develop effective repair solutions.
  • Conduct operational and performance testing following repairs to verify equipment functionality and safety.
  • Order, requisition, and track parts, tools, and materials needed to complete repairs.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair logs, and service documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times.
  • Travel to project sites and field locations as required to perform equipment repairs and support operations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of fleet and operational needs.
