Requirements

  • Graduation from high school
  • Two (2) years of experience performing automotive maintenance and repair work
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within one year of appointment
  • Satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical examination, and administrative screening
  • Subject to random drug/alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation regulations

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with computerized diagnostic equipment
  • Experience with fleet management software
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and diagnoses major mechanical problems involving City automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered construction equipment
  • Replaces or repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment; replaces or repairs components such as generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches
  • Tunes up engines, replacing ignition parts; overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, and differentials; diagnoses and repairs computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering and cooling systems
  • Repairs, adjusts, and replaces brake systems including disc, hydraulic and air brakes
  • Welds, fabricates, and assembles parts and equipment as needed; performs basic body repair work
  • Performs emission repairs for applicable City-owned vehicles
  • Maintains service and time records related to the work accomplished and materials used; maintains inventory and purchases required parts, materials, and equipment
