About The Position

This recruitment will be used to fill multiple vacancies for Equipment Mechanic I positions within the Fleet Services Department and the Motorcycle Shop Assignment. It will also establish an eligible list for future openings. The role involves skilled service, maintenance, and repair of automotive and related equipment, requiring a high degree of technical knowledge and independent judgment. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, troubleshooting hydraulic and electrical issues, and servicing heavy equipment. Assignments may grow in scope as skills develop. This position differs from Equipment Mechanic II by focusing on less complex repairs and not regularly performing major repairs on diesel-powered, heavy-duty equipment. Employees may be assigned shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays, and may be subject to rotational stand-by. Safety equipment and procedures must be used. Supervision is provided by a Shop Foreman or Supervisor, with work reviewed through observation and results. Advancement to Senior Equipment Mechanic I is possible in Fleet Services under specific conditions. This class is FLSA nonexempt.

Requirements

  • Three years as a journey-level mechanic OR three years of experience with the City of Mesa as an Equipment Repair Assistant or an Equipment Mechanic I Trainee.
  • Must provide own basic hand tools and rollaway box.
  • Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License by hire or promotion date.
  • Must meet the qualifications to wear a tight-fitting respirator by passing a medical evaluation in accordance with Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.134 by hire or promotion date and must maintain certification (by assignment).
  • If applying for the Motorcycle Shop Assignment position, a motorcycle endorsement is required by hire or promotion date.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a General Automotive Mechanic is desirable.
  • The following ASE certifications are highly desirable: Suspension and Steering A-4, Brakes A-5, Electrical/Electronic Systems A-6, and Engine Performance A-8.

Responsibilities

Benefits

  • $2000 sign-on bonus for those hired into a vacant Equipment Mechanic I position in Fleet Services, paid at the successful completion of an Initial Regular Probation (IRP) period.
  • 2.5% shift incentive premium for hourly employees assigned to work 2nd or 3rd shift within Fleet Services (applied to base hourly rate), in addition to City of Mesa’s Shift Differential pay.
