Supervises maintenance staff in the maintenance and repair of public transit vehicles to help ensure smooth day-to-day operations and safety. Requirements

  • A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Associate's Degree in a related field preferred
  • Three years of relevant experience performing work in the repair and maintenance or procurement of vehicles and equipment, including a minimum of two years of relevant experience at or above the leader level
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Valid California Class C Driver License
  • Positions in this job classification are considered safety sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations
  • Knowledge of theories and practices of repair and maintenance of transit vehicles, including engines, parts, components, and electrical systems of diesel, gasoline, and alternate fuel vehicles
  • Knowledge of safe and proper use of tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of accident investigation procedures and practices
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing maintenance, repair, and procurement of public transit vehicles
  • Knowledge of project planning and budgeting techniques
  • Knowledge of principles of supervision
  • Knowledge of Title 13 of the California Code of Regulations
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and monitoring work of an equipment maintenance work unit
  • Skill in reading and understanding schematics
  • Skill in interacting professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to exercise judgment and creativity in making conclusions and recommendations
  • Ability to develop and maintain files for payroll, attendance, and budgets
  • Ability to operate computers, Maintenance and Material Management (M3) program terminals, and diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to meet productivity demands
  • Ability to analyze situations, identify problems, and recommend solutions
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor/management agreements
  • Ability to supervise subordinates
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, schedules, and assigns preventive and remedial maintenance work for buses and automobiles or equipment production lines
  • Develops and maintains computer and manual files for payroll, attendance, project budgets, and vehicle service; prepares daily reports
  • Implements and maintains safety programs
  • Ensures compliance and promotes aspects of the Environmental Management System to employees and coworkers
  • Conducts meetings on safety, tool uses, equipment upgrade projects, and other related topics
  • Investigates and reports accidents and injuries
  • Follows up on ordered parts, equipment, and supplies, and administers warranty claims
  • Counsels subordinates on compliance with procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Conducts first-level disciplinary and grievance hearings
  • Analyzes component failures, identifies problems, plans repair and replacement schedules, and provides assistance to staff to remedy problems
  • Reviews Operator defect cards and sets priority for repairs
  • Conducts meetings to determine user needs
  • Approves completed work/repairs
  • Plans, organizes, and coordinates service preparation activities of new buses
  • Prepares various reports, develops presentations, and manages special development projects
  • Supervises and trains subordinates
  • Accounts for subordinate and personal compliance with all of Metro's safety rules, policies, and procedures
