About The Position

This role provides technical assistance and support for substation equipment, including reviewing field test results, providing technical guidance for asset health management systems, and developing new or modifying existing maintenance practices. The position also involves developing repair specifications, providing technical support during capital projects and maintenance activities, supporting training programs, and staying aware of industry issues. Maintaining a safe workplace and supporting emergency plans are also key aspects of the role. The ability to work independently and collaboratively with various internal and external stakeholders is essential. Willingness to travel throughout the FirstEnergy system, including periodic overnight stays, is required.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering (BSEE, BSCE, BSME) from an ABET accredited institution is required.
Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer’s (PE) License (2) a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited institution (3) a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program.
Minimum of 3 (three) years of Engineering experience is required.
Valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.
Must possess a safety culture and maintain a safe work environment for co-workers and the public.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and be able to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines, unexpected developments, changes in project scope, budget constraints, unforeseen field problems, and demands for work assignments outside of the normal duties.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop and maintain relationships across FE, outside firms, and manufacturers/vendors that further facilitate the cooperation needed to complete assigned tasks.
Ability to work independently as well as in teams to coordinate projects with other FirstEnergy departments including but not limited to Project Management, Substation Operations, Portfolio, Asset Management & Records Control, Outage Coordination, Substation Design.
Ability to make practical decisions without undue delay and based on the best information available at the time that the decision must be made.
Must be able to communicate effectively with good verbal skills and writing skills, providing comprehensive project status reports, clear and concise correspondence, and accurate information.
Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem-solving skills.
Must be self-directed and not dependent on detailed instruction from others.
Ability to effectively lead multi-discipline team initiatives.

Nice To Haves

Electrical Engineering is preferred.
A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
Working knowledge of applicable computer software necessary to fulfill job duties including but not limited to Microsoft Office, FileNet, SAP, Cascade, Power BI, QlikView preferred.
Electric Utility experience with substation equipment is highly beneficial.

Responsibilities

Provide technical assistance and support for substation equipment.
Review field test results for transmission and distribution of substation equipment and provide recommendations for resolution of identified deficiencies.
Provide technical guidance for Asset Health Center/APM equipment, including transformers, circuit breaker, and battery test parameters.
Investigate test results that are out of specification, investigate equipment issues, and provide recommended actions.
Provide technical guidance for parameters of future assets to be incorporated into the Asset Health Center/APM, such as capacitor banks, voltage transformers, relay & controls, equipment monitors, DC systems, and protection communication devices.
Develop new or modify existing maintenance practices to address changing technology, new equipment types, improved test and diagnostic methods, regulatory changes, etc.
Develop repair specifications for major equipment.
Provide technical support to field personnel during capital projects, and preventative & corrective maintenance activities.
Support training programs and provide training to TSS employees and regional personnel.
Maintain awareness of emerging utility industry issues through benchmarking and participation in appropriate utility forums/groups.
Participate in industry events as a subject matter expert.
Maintain a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon a knowledge of potential hazards, industry regulations/requirements and company practices.
Support the emergency plan through participation in assigned storm duties.
Ability to work both independently and in unison with others including regional and plant personnel as well as other departments/sections and outside vendors.
Willingness to travel throughout the FirstEnergy system including periodic overnight stays.
