About The Position

This position has regular contact with or control over Indian Children and Vulnerable Adults. In compliance with Federal Law, this position will not be filled by an applicant with any felonious offense or any of two or more misdemeanor offenses under Federal, State, or Tribal law involving crimes of violence; sexual assault, molestation, exploitation, contact, or prostitution; crimes against persons; or offenses committed against children. This position is responsible for oversight of all aspects of the horses involved in Equine Assisted Services (EAS) including ensuring the safety of the horses and participants during sessions. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Primary responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform. This list of responsibilities is intended to be representative of the duties performed within this classification. Requirements

  • Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning certification.
  • 2 years' experience handling the care and well-being of horses.
  • Must pass criminal history background check.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Valid driver's license and be insurable under the Tribe's Insurance Policy.
  • Knowledge of: Horse behavior, care and anatomy, horse tack, equipment, and have exceptional horsemanship skills.
  • Knowledge of: Safety concerns for participants with no prior horse experience.
  • Knowledge of: Standard concepts, practices, policies, and procedures within the behavioral health field.
  • Skill in: Achieving results within expected time periods.
  • Skill in: Highly committed to workplace safety.
  • Skill in: Equine instruction associated with EAS purposes, with a strong emphasis on safety and group control.
  • Ability to: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to: Work effectively with a wide variety of individuals and groups and deal effectively with distractions.
  • Ability to: Uphold strong ethics and maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains physical health and good disposition of horses through conditioning and training.
  • Ensures that veterinary care is provided, and farrier services are engaged.
  • Responsible for ordering all horse feed and ensuring horses are appropriately fed and watered.
  • Ensures that the horse stalls are regularly cleaned, and manure disposed of in a designated space away from the facility density areas and surrounding neighborhood.
  • Trains the horses for involvement in Equine Assisted Services.
  • Grooms horses and maintains tack.
  • Identify and works on any stable related maintenance issues.
  • Provides an atmosphere and area that is safe and conducive to the therapeutic improvement of participants.
  • Co-facilitate equine assisted services.
  • Completes required paperwork of the services provided.
  • Communicates and reports activities and critical incidents.
