About The Position

Interaction with the horses can be a powerful, positive, healing experience that has a lasting impression on each individual and their treatment journey at Alpine Academy. I take ownership and responsibility for the student equine experience at Alpine Academy. My role is to ensure students have consistent access to this wonderful resource and are able to interact with the horses in a manner that is safe for the students and the horses.

  • Ability to instruct, supervise, and intervene with youth during higher-risk activities
  • Working knowledge of equine behavior, body language, and safety protocols
  • Ability to enforce safety expectations and modify or stop activities when needed
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 lbs occasionally (e.g., feed, tack)
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and remain physically active for extended periods in outdoor conditions
  • Ability to mount/dismount and demonstrate basic riding techniques as needed
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments with exposure to weather, dust, and animal-related allergens
  • Comfort working around large animals and inherent risks (e.g., kicks, bites, falls)
  • Pass Background Check with a Residential Treatment level of clearance at all times
  • Receive and maintain other necessary certifications (CPR/First Aid, Restraint Training)
  • Deep knowledge and experience in working with horses: Riding, Instruction, Care and Grooming, Tack, and Feed

Responsibilities

  • Provide organized opportunities for the students to interact with and ride the horses, mostly on weekends and no-school days.
  • Run the Horsemanship Club on Friday afternoons each quarter.
  • Ensure proper care and grooming of the horses.
  • Manage inventory of horse equipment and feed.
  • Instruct students in horsemanship safety and skill development.
  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Department to ensure cleanliness of stalls and arenas.
