About The Position

The Equine Reproduction Laboratory at Colorado State University is seeking applications for an Equine Breeding Farm Internship. This program, running from January 8, 2027, to July 19, 2027, is designed to provide hands-on training in equine breeding farm procedures and management, with a focus on preparing individuals for careers in the equine breeding industry. Interns will rotate through three service areas: Stallion Service, Mare Service, and Weekend/Overnight Duty, with some on-call responsibilities expected. A certificate of achievement will be awarded upon successful completion, and job placement assistance is available upon request. Salary and on-site housing (with rent) are provided.

Requirements

• Completed a BS degree in Equine Sciences, Animal Science, or related discipline.
• At least 5 years of experience being around and handling horses.
• Comfortable around horses and knowledge of basic horse behavior.
• Good attitude and work ethic.
• Ability to work in a team setting as well as independently.
• Physically demanding job requiring the ability to lift at least 50lbs.
• Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of application.
• Must safely lift and carry items that weigh up to 50lbs.
• Must be eligible to work in the U.S at time of application.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in an equine breeding farm setting.
• Experience handling stallions, mares, and foals.
• Experience giving IV, IM, and oral medications.

Responsibilities

• Provide assistance in Stallion Service and Mare Service, including horse handling, record keeping, medication administration, routine medical care, restraining for farrier, grooming, blanketing, and turn out of horses.
• Assist veterinarians in the examination of mares, stallions, and foals.
• Assist with semen collection and evaluation, insemination of mares, hormone therapy, embryo transfer, and restraining for reproductive procedures.
• Monitor late-term pregnant mares for foaling, notify the on-call veterinarian, and provide assistance during foaling.
• Assist with the medical care of stallions, mares, and foals, including trailering if needed.
• Assist with general laboratory functions such as cleaning lab and stock areas, stocking, equipment cleaning, autoclaving, laundry, power washing, and reception.
• Participate in a breeding season internship program with rotations through Stallion Service, Mare Service, and Weekend/Overnight Duty.
• Perform on-call duty as required.
