About The Position

The Illinois Department of Public Health seeks to hire a maternal and infant health epidemiologist. This position will conduct analytic studies for the Office of Women’s Health and Family Services and lead data management, evaluation, and communication efforts related to maternal and infant health initiatives. Position will require management of large data systems, independent analytic projects, and collaboration with internal and external partners. Competitive candidates will have a master’s in public health or similar degree with a focus on epidemiology, experience with statistical software with a preference for SAS, and a background in maternal and child health especially Title V programs.

Requirements

  • Requires possession of a bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, demography, biostatistics, sociology, psychology, economics, or related social science research field from an accredited university.
  • Requires four (4) years of professional experience in applied epidemiology, biostatistics, population, or a related research field.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in public health or similar focus on epidemiology
  • One (1) year of experience using statistical software (such as SAS, Stata, SUDAAN or R) to analyze public health data using appropriate statistical methods in a professional or academic setting
  • One (1) year of experience managing, cleaning, and organizing public health data in a professional or academic setting
  • One (1) year of experience preparing written and oral reports and presentations that summarize findings from epidemiologic studies in a professional or academic setting
  • One (1) year of experience working with maternal and child health data or programs in a professional or academic setting

Responsibilities

  • Develops, designs, and conducts highly technical planning for analytic studies of Office of Women’s Health & Family Services projects in the field of maternal and infant health.
  • Compiles and analyzes statistical data from data sources such as but not limited to Vital Records, Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), Newborn Screening and Perinatal System data, to perform scientific investigations of maternal and infant health.
  • Develops and reports on quality performance measures for the Office of Women’s Health and Family Services.
  • Plans and executes the accurate and timely development of major Office of Women’s Health & Family Services data reports on maternal and infant health.
  • Manages internal or external report requests regarding emerging or existing maternal and infant health issues, such as maternal morbidity and mortality, maternal chronic conditions, perinatal morbidity and mortality, prenatal care utilization, disparities in health status/health services access and utilization, and other issues as needed for the Office of Women’s Health and Family Services management team.
  • Develops and utilizes effective techniques for oral and written communication with state and federal health agencies to exchange technical knowledge and execute local and statewide program goals.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
