About The Position

The Environmentalist II is an important part of the team responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of Advocate Health facilities. This role involves a variety of tasks including floor care, waste disposal, and general environmental services. The position requires a commitment to Operation Excellence and proactive reporting of maintenance needs. The Environmentalist II will prepare new projects for opening, ensure floor surfaces are ready for traffic, and perform tasks efficiently to support patient care and facility operations.

Requirements

  • Must be able to use visual near and distance acuity.
  • Must have verbal ability to communicate in person and over the phone or radio.
  • Must be able to assist co-workers in transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using good body mechanics.
  • Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds.
  • Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and change from one position to the other rapidly.
  • Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 pounds.
  • Must be able to tolerate high noise, busy atmospheres and noxious odors.
  • Must be able to work in noisy environments and be self directed to complete jobs as ordered.
  • Must be able to remain calm under stressful situations.
  • Must be able to assess and respond to multiple situations simultaneously.
  • Must be able to assist co-workers in multiple overlapping tasks simultaneously.
  • Must be able to prioritize job tasks and organize work space to be efficient and conducive to completing work tasks as assigned in a timely manner.
  • If job class is identified as falling under POPE C, the individual must pass the cardiac recovery test.

Responsibilities

  • Extract carpeted surfaces, clean upholstery, or bonnet carpets.
  • Report any hazards to a Supervisor and place Wet Floor Signs appropriately.
  • Assist with setups in the hospital, particularly in the Trice Conference Center or West Tower.
  • Help with minor moves at any of CGHS’s facilities as directed by a Supervisor.
  • Transport large items to the Macon City Landfill when they cannot be disposed of via compactors.
  • Prepare all floor surfaces for traffic on a given schedule for new projects.
  • Strip and refinish patient room floors and elevator floors quickly to facilitate patient flow and room turnover.
  • Practice the highest level of Operation Excellence in all interactions.
  • Report any maintenance items needing attention from the Facilities Management Department to the Supervisor.
  • Police the grounds for debris, trash, and cigarette butts around assigned areas and throughout the hospital grounds.
  • Utilize equipment safely, including placement of electrical cords and use of protective equipment.
  • Return all equipment to the Equipment Room in clean and working order.
  • Make on-the-spot decisions regarding safe disposal of materials.
  • Effectively and efficiently package biohazardous waste for cost-effective and safe weight.
  • Correctly package and handle biohazardous waste according to safety standards when moving it throughout the hospital and preparing it for shipment.
  • Make several rounds of the MCCG facility each shift to remove refuse from patient units.
  • Use large rolling bins (with closed tops) to transport refuse.
  • Move cardboard throughout the facility for recycling, moving it regularly to the cardboard compactor.
