About The Position

BWXT is seeking an experienced Environmental/Waste Management professional to support environmental and waste management activities for BWSR. This position requires in-depth expertise in environmental and waste management requirements, along with general knowledge of related technical and regulatory areas. The successful candidate will work independently, with guidance generally required only in the most complex situations, to ensure BWSR environmental and waste management programs comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This position will use analytical thinking, technical expertise, and sound judgment to solve complex problems, recommend best practices, and develop solutions that support customer, operational, and project objectives. Key areas of responsibility include waste characterization, packaging, storage and disposition; waste minimization and pollution prevention; compliance with RCRA, TSCA, CAA, CWA, NESHAP, NEPA, CERCLA, and DOT requirements; and applicable procedures, documentation, and recordkeeping.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field.
• Minimum of 10 years of relevant environmental and/or waste management experience.
• In-depth expertise in environmental and waste management requirements and general knowledge of related technical and regulatory areas.
• Demonstrated ability to independently analyze and solve complex technical and regulatory problems using sound judgment.
• Ability to prioritize responsibilities and effectively work in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with employees, supervisors, customers, and other stakeholders.
• Strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers.
• Ability to provide technical guidance and support to coworkers and contribute to the achievement of customer, operational, and project objectives.
• Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain required security clearance.
• Must obtain and maintain appropriate radiological controls and other qualifications required for the position.

Nice To Haves

• Advanced degree may substitute for some years of experience
• Current DOE “L” security clearance.
• Previous experience in the nuclear or radiological field.
• Prior DOE and/or Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) experience.

Responsibilities

• Prepare sampling and analysis plans in accordance with SW-846 guidelines.
• Interpret laboratory analytical data and characterize materials for disposal in accordance with applicable RCRA and TSCA requirements and disposal facility waste acceptance criteria.
• Ensure work documents contain compliant characterization, management, packaging, and disposition instructions for project-generated PCB, hazardous, low-level radioactive, low-level mixed, asbestos, industrial, and universal wastes.
• Apply in-depth environmental and waste management expertise to identify and develop solutions to complex technical and regulatory issues.
• Interpret internal and external environmental and regulatory challenges and recommend best practices to improve processes and maintain compliance.
• Interface with the client to ensure BWSR is meeting NRF environmental and waste management objectives.
• Conduct self-assessments and safety observations to identify potential issues and opportunities for improvement.
• Assist in developing project- and task-level procedures to ensure applicable environmental and waste management requirements are identified and appropriately integrated into work documents.
• Provide technical leadership, consultation, and guidance to coworkers in resolving complex environmental and waste management issues.
• Assist with the administration and interpretation of applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
• Monitor work activities to ensure employees follow applicable task work documents and associated environmental and waste management requirements.
• Support the Environmental/Waste Manager as required.
• May lead environmental and waste management projects or activities with moderate resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity.
• Perform other environmental and waste management-related duties as assigned.
