About The Position

This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental regulations related to wastewater treatment, hazardous waste management, and recycling programs. The technician will monitor and treat wastewater, manage hazardous waste storage and shipments, oversee in-house recycling, prepare reports, and respond to environmental incidents. The position also involves training associates on environmental procedures and supporting the company's environmental management systems.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of EPA, OSHA, and DOT rules.
  • Knowledge of chemistry.
  • Knowledge of mechanical maintenance, especially pumps, valves, and hydraulics.
  • Completed DOT hazardous materials shipping training.
  • Completed IATA Dangerous Goods shipping training.
  • Completed OSHA 40 hour training.
  • Completed hazardous waste annual refresher training.
  • Completed wastewater pretreatment and/or grade IV operator certifications.
  • 2 years of environmental experience.
  • Ability to successfully demonstrate technical requirements such as chemical sampling and analysis, wastewater bench testing, chemical handling safety, hazardous waste identification and management, and other technical environmental requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • State of North Carolina Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification (preferred).
  • Environmental or science associate degree is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor incoming water, perform treatment analysis, and treat water with necessary chemicals to meet permit requirements.
  • Discharge treated water to the city sewage plant and monitor the discharge.
  • Monitor chemical inventory, order new chemicals, and repair pumps and other treatment equipment.
  • Check hazardous waste storage areas for EPA compliance violations and correct them.
  • Combine waste into appropriate containers, ensure containers are properly closed and labeled.
  • Provide feedback to logistics or production management regarding hazardous waste violations.
  • Coordinate and oversee shipments of various waste materials (solvents, inks, thinners, used oil, coolants, sludges, batteries, computers, mercury-containing devices, etc.) in accordance with EPA and DOT requirements.
  • Determine non-waste hazardous materials per DOT definition and perform and coordinate proper shipping.
  • Check the status of in-house recycling programs (paper, plastics, metals, etc.), including storage areas and containers.
  • Respond to leadership complaints regarding recycling programs.
  • Supervise shipments of recycled goods.
  • Prepare monthly wastewater reports in accordance with City of Statesville requirements.
  • Verify medical waste is properly prepared and manifested for off-site shipment and disposal.
  • Conduct hazardous waste sampling per EPA requirements when necessary.
  • Confirm waste being sent to landfill by performing dumpster dives and following landfill bound trucks.
  • Support kaizen efforts to reduce waste and other costs.
  • Assist in improving the formal environmental management system.
  • Train associates on proper environmental actions at department and team levels.
  • Get along with co-workers and internal and external customers.
  • Prepare monthly wastewater reports for management review and submittal to the City of Statesville wastewater treatment facility.
  • Host EPA and State of North Carolina Hazardous waste inspectors, as well as city and state wastewater inspectors (normally 2-4 times per year).
  • Respond to chemical spills on campus, contain, neutralize, remove, and prepare materials for proper disposal.
