Environmental Technician II (Temporary - Dare)
About The Position
This is a temporary position with the Department of Environmental Quality, located at 1021 Driftwood Drive, Manteo - Dare County. The Marine Fisheries Environmental Technician II position will serve as a technician to the principal biologist on a long line survey for adult red drum in the Pamlico Sound. Sampling for this fishery-independent survey occurs in the lower Pamlico Sound in Outer Banks, North Carolina. Normal work hours will vary, but late evenings, early mornings, and overnight travel are required. Occasional work on weekends may be required. This role offers exposure to an agency's culture, processes, and procedures, potentially providing valuable experience for those seeking permanent employment with the state.
Requirements
- Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in environmental or natural resources management work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to swim.
- Ability to lift heavy samples of fish (up to 60 pounds).
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Nice To Haves
- Experience operating and/or trailering boats
- Experience maintaining trucks, trailers, and/or boats
- Experience with biological sampling
- Experience with data collection
Responsibilities
- Coordinating and conducting field sampling and data collection for the adult red drum long line survey as well as other various sampling programs.
- Conducting seine surveys, gill net surveys, water quality monitoring, finfish tagging, and acoustic telemetry.
- Operating and trailering vessels up to 27 feet in length.
- Boat, trailer, and gear maintenance and construction.
- Recording, coding, and verifying data associated with the long line survey.
