About The Position

This position is responsible for the implementation of the Florida Forest Service’s (FFS) Silviculture Best Management Practices (BMP) and Forestry Wildlife Best Management Practices for State Imperiled Species (WBMP) Programs across Florida. The role involves conducting statewide biennial surveys, providing technical assistance, conducting outreach programs, and performing other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• A high school diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of experience in environmental protection, regulation, or health; one of the physical or natural sciences; or engineering; or
• A high school diploma or its equivalent and one and a half (1.5) years of experience as an Environmental Specialist I or higher with the State of Florida; or
• A bachelor's degree (4 years) or higher from an accredited college and six (6) months of experience in environmental protection, regulation, or health; one of the physical or natural sciences; or engineering.
• Requires possession of a valid class E driver license.

Responsibilities

• Conduct the statewide biennial Silviculture Best Management Practices Implementation Survey, and biennial Forestry Wildlife Best Management Practices Implementation Survey (alternating years).
• Identify survey sites from FFS aircraft and/or through remote sensing techniques, followed by on-site visits for evaluations of timber harvesting, road construction and maintenance, stream crossings, site preparation, tree planting, and other silvicultural activities, as appropriate, to determine BMP/WBMP compliance.
• Research and map activity areas in ArcGIS, accurately enter all collected data into the survey databases by the assigned deadlines, assist in analyzing the data and final report writing.
• Provide technical assistance on Silviculture BMP, Forestry WBMP, and other forest hydrology related issues statewide.
• Assist landowners and others with application of the Water Management District Rule for Minor Silvicultural Surface Water Management Systems, enrollment into the Silviculture BMP Notice of Intent (NOI), and the Forestry WBMP NOI programs, and with other BMP relevant requests as needed.
• Stay abreast of current information on BMP and associated regulations and serve as a lead for disseminating this information to FFS Cooperative Forestry Assistance (CFA) and state lands field staff.
• Assist the BMP Program Manager with processing applications and maintaining database records for the Silvicultural BMP and Forestry WBMP NOI programs and conduct Florida Farm Team Card reviews.
• Conduct BMP implementation monitoring on Florida State Forests for silviculture-related activities.
• Compile silviculture activity reports, import activity area shapefiles into ArcGIS applications, schedule and conduct BMP site evaluations, and provide feedback to state forest staff.
• Enter collected data into the survey database and compose narrative summaries with photographic evidence of the evaluated activities and any noted BMP concerns.
• Assist the BMP Program Manager with analyzing the collected data and writing the State Forest Silviculture BMP Activity Report.
• Assist BMP Program Manager in planning, developing, and conducting BMP outreach programs.
• Conduct in-person and virtual BMP training sessions on Silviculture BMP and Forestry WBMP utilizing PowerPoint presentations, field training, and recorded video presentations for loggers, silviculture contractors, landowners, foresters, land managers, students, etc.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
