About The Position

This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a community a better place to live and ensure it is safe from environmental health threats. The role is part of a dynamic 10-member environmental health team engaged in a variety of cutting-edge environmental health initiatives. The position involves working within ten regulatory programs including Food, Biomedical Waste, Group Care, Swimming pools, mobile home parks, and Ocean Sampling. It also offers a learning/mentoring opportunity for those desiring a career in environmental health sciences. The position is based in Daytona Beach, Florida, with most daily time spent interacting with the public and inspecting facilities in the community. Office time will be dedicated to report writing, answering calls, and processing inspection-related documents. The role serves as an ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST II, working under the general supervision of the ENVIRONMENTAL HLTH PRGRAM CONSULTANT-SES, position #64068601, conducting EH surveillance and inspection activities. The incumbent works independently within general environmental health program areas and may serve on various programmatic teams led by Program Managers or ad hoc teams for special projects. The position is responsible for a geographic area within Volusia County.

Requirements

• Must be willing to physically come in the office to perform the duties & responsibilities of the positions
• Must have current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
• Must have a Bachelor of Science Degree in a Public Health, Environmental Health, Natural or Physical Science
• Must be able to work 40 hours a week
• Must have a valid Driver’s License
• Must have use of a reliable private vehicle
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds, stretch and bend
• Must be able to work in extreme heat, humidity and other inclement weather elements
• Must be currently a Certified Environmental Health Professional in the Food program or a Registered Sanitarian (RS) or Registered Environmental Health Professional (REHP)
• Knowledge of Software programs used by FDOH for environmental health inspections, data collection and analysis
• Knowledge of Chapter 381 Florida Statutes, associated regulations and Policy 150-4 procedures
• Knowledge of the policies and procedures for the Public Pools and Facilities Programs within Environmental Health
• Knowledge of The environmental health sciences, Knowledge of Food Sanitation and safety principles
• All Florida Department of Health positions require the incumbent to be able to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Responsibilities

• Conducts inspections in the following primary programs areas: Public swimming pools/bathing places, Food Hygiene Facilities, Biomedical waste, Group Care Facilities, Tattoo, Geographic Information System mapping, mobile home parks, recreational vehicle parks and temporary campgrounds.
• Conducts complaint investigations of these facilities and of environmental sanitary nuisances.
• Enters inspections and permit findings into EHD database.
• Obtains samples or gathers demonstrative evidence as required.
• Maintains all records required in the proper performance of the above programs.
• Seeks compliance with all laws, rules, codes, regulations and ordinances applicable to these programs by following established legal policies and procedures.
• Initiates enforcement action by drafting notices of violation, notices of intended action or citations, provides testimony in legal cases and assists department legal staff with case preparation.
• Works primarily outdoors to perform inspections in a wide variety of environments.
• Completes assigned work and prepares reports of activities within required timeframes.
• Performs animal Decapitation for the Rabies Surveillance program, assisting with the transportation, preparation and shipping of specimens in need of rabies testing.
• Other duties and special projects as assigned which may include working on weekends and before/after normal work hours.
• Public speaking is required for this position.
• Participates in team meetings, quality improvement projects, completing special assignments, community outreach/education efforts or projects as assigned.
• May be required to present projects to internal/external customers, facilitate meetings and provide educational instruction to the public.
• Required to be available during natural disasters or public health emergencies for shelter duty or to perform other tasks as assigned.
• Completes required ICS and FEMA courses to fill critical roles during disasters and may be required to attend preparedness trainings.
• Trains for and serves as a team member on the Environmental Health Strike team.
