About The Position

This position is responsible for reviewing septic system applications and permits, conducting inspections of septic systems and Aerobic Treatment Units, and enforcing septic system regulations. The role involves data entry, operating vehicles, using various tools for soil profiling and measurement, and investigating sanitary nuisance complaints to protect public health. The Environmental Specialist II also participates in public education and attends training to stay updated on environmental health regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of class work in public health, environmental health, environmental science, or a physical or biological science is required.
  • Ability to use PC
  • Use of general office equipment
  • Use bucket auger to profile soils to a depth of 72", and ability to use field measuring devices.
  • Ability to lift over 50 pounds.
  • Ability to travel to various locations in Brevard County up to 100+ miles a day.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather including 95+ degree weather.
  • Must be proficient in computers, laptops, and Microsoft and other computer programs.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
  • This position requires daily in-office or field work.
  • Must carry a valid Driver’s license.
  • Ability to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Have a current Certified Environmental Health Professional certificate in Onsite Sewage or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire
  • Have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in the Onsite Sewage Program with the Florida Department of Health.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews septic system applications.
  • Independently drafts and issues septic system permits.
  • Reviews OSTDS inspections submitted by private provider inspectors.
  • Conducts inspections of septic systems and Aerobic Treatment Units.
  • Uses bucket auger to dig 6-foot holes and profiles soil for color and texture.
  • Conducts site evaluations for septic system suitability.
  • Responsible for all data entry of all inspections and other work completed.
  • Operates 4-wheel drive vehicles.
  • Uses laser level, probe, measuring tape, lid puller, scaled ruler, and other tools.
  • Enforces septic system regulations.
  • Conducts field inspections of regulated facilities.
  • Participates in public education (individually, group setting, and phone calls).
  • Attends training sessions, seminars, and meetings to obtain education on all environmental health regulations related to public health that are under the jurisdiction of the department.
  • Investigates sanitary nuisance complaints.
  • Protects Public Health.
  • Issues enforcement action for non-compliant Aerobic Treatment Units
