About The Position

This is an open competitive opportunity for an ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST II with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Aquaculture. The position has regulatory responsibilities and requires occasional travel. The role involves determining proper monitoring programs, performing in situ measurements, collecting samples for analysis, and conducting computer modeling of environmental water quality parameters. The specialist will also prepare technical reports, conduct shoreline surveys, evaluate and maintain water quality monitoring technologies, and maintain office and field equipment. Additionally, the position requires attending meetings, assisting other districts statewide, and performing other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• A high school diploma or its equivalent and one (1) year of experience in environmental protection, regulation, public health, or food safety; one of the physical or natural sciences; agriculture; or engineering.
• A high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months of experience as an Environmental Specialist I or higher with the State of Florida.
• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Requires possession of a valid Class E Driver License.

• Must successfully complete an approved boating safety course and obtain a Boating Safety Education Identification Card issued by the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) within 90 days of employment and maintain throughout employment.

Responsibilities

• Determines proper monitoring programs and performs in situ measurement of physical parameters and collection of water and tissue samples for laboratory bacteriological and chemical analysis; requires operation of state vehicles.
• Uses technical field equipment and outboard motorboats.
• Serves as professional specialist in conducting computer modeling of environmental water quality parameters for shallow inshore areas.
• Responsible for collection of pollution source information and hydrographic and meteorology data for incorporation into water classification and management plans.
• Prepares technical reports including charts, graphs, statistical analyses and interpretation for supervisory review.
• Conducts shoreline surveys to evaluate actual and potential impact of point and nonpoint pollution sources for use in conjunction with hydrographical, meteorological and bacteriological data to develop management plans for existing shellfish areas and unclassified estuaries districtwide.
• Establishes water sampling stations based on these surveys.
• Evaluates, installs and maintains new and innovative water quality monitoring technologies and instrumentation.
• Maintains district office, technical field instruments, boat equipment and vehicles.
• Files administrative reports and requisitions supplies.
• Attends meetings and reviews documents regarding water quality and shellfish.
• Assists other districts statewide in performance of shoreline surveys, water quality monitoring and computer assisted statistical analyses.
• Participates in the editorial review of other district office comprehensive shellfish harvesting area surveys.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
