About The Position

This position is responsible for protecting public health through the inspection and enforcement of septic system and Aerobic Treatment Unit regulations. The role involves conducting field inspections, data entry, reviewing applications, issuing permits, performing site evaluations, and participating in public education initiatives. The specialist will also investigate sanitary nuisance complaints and attend training to stay updated on environmental health regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of class work in public health, environmental health, environmental science, or a physical or biological science is required.
  • Ability to use PC
  • Use of general office equipment
  • Use bucket auger to profile soils to a depth of 72", and ability to use field measuring devices.
  • Ability to lift over 50 pounds.
  • Ability to travel to various locations in Brevard County up to 100+ miles a day.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather including 95+ degree weather.
  • Required to obtain certification for Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and work outside all day in all forms of weather.
  • Required to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.
  • Must be proficient in computers, laptops, and Microsoft and other computer programs.
  • Must carry a valid Driver’s license.
  • All Florida Department of Health positions require the incumbent to be able to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts inspections of septic systems and Aerobic Treatment Units.
  • Conducts field inspections of regulated facilities.
  • Issues enforcement action for non-compliant Aerobic Treatment Units.
  • Enforces septic system regulations.
  • Responsible for all data entry of all inspections and other work completed.
  • Reviews septic system applications.
  • Writes and issues septic system permits.
  • Uses bucket auger to dig 6-foot holes and profiles soil for color and texture.
  • Conducts site evaluations for septic system suitability.
  • Operates 4-wheel drive vehicles.
  • Uses laser level, probe, measuring tape, lid puller, scaled ruler, and other tools.
  • Participates in public education (individually, group setting, and phone calls).
  • Attends training sessions, seminars, and meetings to obtain education on all environmental health regulations related to public health that are under the jurisdiction of the department.
  • Investigates sanitary nuisance complaints.
  • Protects Public Health.
