About The Position

Join the Department of Water, Energy, and Environment for a rewarding temporary opportunity running 6 months. This assignment offers valuable hands-on experience in the field, with the potential for extension based on program needs and performance. Under immediate to general supervisor, this position will be responsible for performing streamflow measurements, assist with servicing and maintaining stream flow gaging stations, investigating surface water pumping and diversions during the irrigation season to monitor compliance with Nebraska water law. This position will also participate in conducting dam safety inspections, spending time working on topographic surveys, and be required to compile and organize stream flow, canal discharge, pumping, and other diversion data including checking and review of this data.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in the physical sciences, natural sciences, environmental science, geology, biology, agronomy, civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, hydrology, community and regional planning, or a related field OR two years of work experience in a related area.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds
  • Ability to climb, bend, and stoop
  • Ability to work outside, and work in and round flowing water
  • Regular and reliable attendance required
  • Valid Driver's License required

Responsibilities

  • Performs streamflow measurements.
  • Assists with servicing and maintaining stream flow gaging stations.
  • Investigates surface water pumping and diversions during the irrigation season to monitor compliance with Nebraska water law.
  • Participates in conducting dam safety inspections.
  • Spends time working on topographic surveys.
  • Compiles and organizes stream flow, canal discharge, pumping, and other diversion data including checking and review of this data.
  • Works with irrigators, Irrigation Districts, Natural Resources Districts, and others in the performance of field office responsibilities.
  • Conducts dam safety inspections to ensure that existing structures are properly maintained.
  • Measures streamflow for water administration activities and calibrating streamgaging stations.
  • Performs data entry of surface water quantity data into DWEE surface water database management system and performs certain quality assurance checks.
  • Assists with other Section activities as needed including public presentations, investigations, reports, equipment maintenance, training and other duties as assigned.
