About The Position

This is a standard position description for use in an environmental program in which the application of scientific principles and technical practices to the protection and optimum use of air, land fish and water resources as well as the management of urban development, leads to an improvement in the health and well-being of people and their environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science or related field.
  • Associates degree plus one year of experience.
  • Two years of experience as an Environmental Specialist Trainee.
  • Knowledge of the principles of natural science as it relates to environmental control, and its natural habitat.
  • Knowledge of current techniques and principles of environmental control.
  • Knowledge of technical terminology used in environmental control.
  • Knowledge of basic procedures used in sampling and related data collection.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures and purposes of investigations and analysis.
  • Knowledge of Federal and Local environmental laws and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare scientific and technical reports as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, private business representative, and the general public.
  • Ability to perform statistical computations.
  • Ability to understand and interpret environmental laws, rules and regulations.
  • Ability to swim/scuba dive.

Responsibilities

  • Performs inspections on sewage treatment plants, water, soil etc., to determine compliance with environmental protection laws.
  • Visits sites.
  • Accepts permit applications from the general public relative to the type of business they are in.
  • Reviews applications to determine accuracy and completeness.
  • Performs the necessary steps required to bring application to completion.
  • Collects water samples, pesticide samples etc. for the purpose of laboratory analysis.
  • May perform scuba diving activities to test underwater reefs etc.
  • May testify in investigative/court hearings when necessary relative to environmental violations.
