About The Position

The Environmental Specialist I position with the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County is a regulatory role primarily focused on the Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems (OSTDS) program. The position entails conducting site evaluations and inspections for system construction and field work, while ensuring that permits for new, modified, or repaired systems are issued within strict state-mandated timelines—typically between two to eight business days. Beyond field work, the role involves significant administrative responsibilities, such as entering technical data into the Environmental Health Database (EHD), maintaining accurate record-keeping for timesheets and mileage, and certifying Employee Activity Records (EARs) with high precision. The incumbent is also expected to participate in community outreach events, investigate complaints for enforcement of state and county ordinances, and complete mandatory professional development training to maintain their Certified Environmental Health Professional (CEHP) status. This position operates on a 40-hour work week (typically 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM), requires a valid driver's license, and demands the ability to work under minimal supervision to meet rigorous documentation and quality standards.

Requirements

• Ability to multi-task and follow supervision.
• Skilled in the use of computer databases and data entry.
• FDOH Certification necessary for the regulation, inspection, and enforcement of FAC 64E-6 for Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in a physical or natural science from an accredited college or university with no less than 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of major course work in physical or natural sciences.
• A valid Florida driver license.
• Ability to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Nice To Haves

• Current certification to perform Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Services (OSTDS) for the Florida Department of Health
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• College course in soil science or related subject; or job experience that included soil evaluations
• 1 year of experience working outdoors conducting field work in areas that have developed land parcels and in areas with unimproved land parcels working in all types of weather conditions; or equivalent college coursework with field work.
