About The Position

This exciting opportunity is for an Environmental Specialist I to join a dynamic 10-member environmental health team passionately engaged in a variety of cutting-edge environmental health initiatives. The role involves working within several regulatory programs, including OSTDS inspections, Public Water System Inspections, and private well and irrigation system permitting. It offers an incredible learning/mentoring opportunity for those desiring a career in the environmental health sciences. Reporting to the Drinking Water Program Consultant, the specialist will mitigate environmental health threats through conducting inspections and risk assessments. The ideal candidate is someone passionate about environmental public health causes and has a desire to develop their scientific, regulatory, and public relations professional skills. The position is based in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Most of the daily time will be spent out in the community interacting with the public and inspecting facilities, with some office time for report writing, answering calls, and processing inspection-related documents. Volusia County, where the office is located, is home to over 47 miles of beaches, including Daytona Beach, and is one of the fastest-growing counties in central Florida, offering numerous recreational and cultural opportunities.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Software programs used by FDOH for environmental health inspections, data collection and analysis
  • Knowledge of Chapter 381 Florida Statutes, associated regulations and Policy 150-4 procedures
  • Knowledge of environmental health laws, rules and procedures associated with well /water system and/or OSTDS inspections
  • Knowledge of practices used in EH inspections and how they are used to educate the public, enforce rules and gain compliance
  • Must be willing to physically come in the office to perform the duties & responsibilities of the positions
  • Must have current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
  • Must have a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences or public health, or will you within 6 months of hire date
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License
  • Must be willing to drive your personal vehicle to conduct field inspections
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds, stretch and bend
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat, humidity and other inclement weather elements

Nice To Haves

  • Skills to operate common EH field testing equipment and ancillary inspection equipment
  • Ability to use DOH and DEP computer programs for program administration, workflow monitoring, data collection
  • Skill to use EH laws, rules and procedures to conduct an accurate and objective inspection
