About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Environmental Manager, this role is responsible for performing daily and weekly environmental inspections and various other tasks throughout the Company's everyday operations that affect environmental compliance. The position requires regular attendance, the ability to work flexible hours including overtime, weekends, and holidays, and compliance with company, Federal, State, and local safety, and ethics rules, regulations, and policies. The role involves assisting Production to ensure compliance with environmental permits, laws, and regulatory requirements, operating various equipment, and maintaining inventory and storage of hazardous materials. Additionally, the Environmental Specialist will assist in investigating and solving compliance problems, performing facility inspections, and working with minimal supervision. This role may indirectly supervise and/or train subordinates.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalence.
  • Three or more years of environmental work experience desired.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of ship terminology and environmental regulations desired.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written, or diagram forms or plans.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of safe operation and use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure.
  • Ability to learn and retain knowledge.
  • Integrity, ethics, flexibility/ adaptability, initiative, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, safety-conscious, and multitasking.
  • Maintain the confidential integrity of details pertaining to Eastern Shipbuilding Group.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment, as prescribed under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
  • The employee must be able to work above ground at heights of a minimum of 50 feet aloft and/or working from scaffolding and/or man-lifts while working with machinery; in confined spaces and withstanding extreme heat and cold in an outside climate or confined space.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily and weekly environmental inspections of the facility.
  • Assist in providing support to Production to ensure compliance with environmental permits, laws, and regulatory requirements.

  • Assist in maintaining inventory and storage of hazardous materials.
  • Assist in the investigation and solving of compliance problems, questions, or complaints.
  • Work with minimal supervision and carry out duties as instructed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
