About The Position

The Environmental Services Worker is responsible for the overall cleanliness and upkeep of Edmonton Centre of Hope buildings and/or grounds. This role ensures services are delivered in a manner that meets or exceeds Health & Safety Standards and funder/contract expectations. The position demonstrates respect for all individuals, aims to provide a home-like environment, and evidences Christian values. The Environmental Services Worker is supervised by the Environmental Services Manager and may receive direction from site management. This is a casual position with no fixed working schedules.

Requirements

  • High School graduate required
  • Basic housekeeping course and WHMIS certification
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • 3 months to 1 year prior related experience
  • General familiarity with cleaning procedures in an organizational setting
  • Ability to operate commercial cleaning equipment
  • Knowledge of infection, prevention and control procedures
  • Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army – its mission, culture, and values
  • Good communication skills – both verbal and written
  • Ability to work well in a team setting
  • Must be able to demonstrate work methods to new employees when required
  • Effective organizational and time management skills
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential
  • All Environmental Services Workers are required to wear close-toed non-skid shoes (personal expense)
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B

Responsibilities

  • General Cleaning: Sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning washroom fixtures, walls, doors, floors, ceilings, windows, light fixtures, storage areas, bins, changing and processing linens, stocking linen and supply areas, and removal of garbage and recycling. Ensuring high standards of cleanliness in residents' rooms, common areas, staff room, chapel, dining areas, computer room, offices, reception, meeting rooms, public washrooms, and exterior grounds. Spot washing walls, cleaning blinds, windows, doors, furnishings, stripping and waxing floors, and vacuuming/shampooing carpets as needed. Cleaning residents' rooms, changing linen and bedding, cleaning common washrooms and toilets. Cleaning and preparing residents' rooms, pods, and dormitories upon resident checkout. Moving and arranging furniture as required. Maintaining external property, including cleaning exterior windows, picking up litter, emptying outside garbage bins, sweeping sidewalks, gardening/watering, and pruning shrubs and raking.
  • Infection, Prevention & Control: Using universal precautions, appropriate cleaning supplies, disposable gloves, masks, and coveralls as required. Disposing of bio-hazards appropriately and using proper hand washing techniques. Carrying out infestation control procedures according to established protocols, including the use of protective clothing and materials. Ensuring proper handling and maintenance of cleaning equipment and notifying the manager of needed repairs or replacements.
  • Inventory Check and Stock Supplies: Restocking washroom supplies, receiving and distributing supplies as required. Ensuring proper storage, labeling, and care of cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Laundry: Cleaning bedding, rags, mop heads, and uniforms on a regular basis. Performing inventory and labeling of all linen supplies. Ensuring clean and dried linens are bagged and stored to prevent dust, contamination, and infestations. Completing minor sewing/tailoring duties as needed. Maintaining an orderly and clean laundry area.
  • Other duties: Representing The Salvation Army professionally and upholding its Mission. Performing other related duties as assigned.
