About The Position

This role is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, orderliness, and sanitary condition of hospital facilities. The technician will perform a variety of cleaning tasks using hand and powered equipment, manage cleaning supplies and equipment, and ensure proper waste disposal and linen management. Specific protocols for cleaning isolation rooms, operating rooms, and other critical areas must be followed, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to infection control policies. The position also involves assisting with moving heavy items and cleaning patient care equipment.

Requirements

  • One (1) year direct work experience in custodial services and/or healthcare services.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency (HSE).
  • Valid, unrestricted, insurable driver’s license.
  • Resume and references are required.

Responsibilities

  • Vacuums, sweeps, mops, scrubs, applies floor finish, and polishes floor surfaces throughout the Hospital facilities, including stairways and elevators, using hand or powered equipment.
  • Maintains a stock of cleaning materials and equipment, reporting low supplies and maintaining custodial equipment through cleaning, oiling, and adjusting.
  • Reports major repairs needed for equipment and facilities to supervisors.
  • Empties waste baskets, trash containers from offices, and refuse containers from patient rooms, transporting refuse to designated outdoor areas (compactors or dumpsters).
  • Washes windows (inside and out), dusts blinds, performs high dusting, washes walls, dusts vents, and cleans light fixtures on a routine and planned basis, which may require climbing ladders.
  • Washes chairs and cushions in waiting areas.
  • Maintains restrooms in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition, including sweeping, vacuuming, scrubbing, waxing floors, and cleaning/disinfecting/deodorizing fixtures.
  • Replaces deodorizers, toilet tissue, hand towels, and soaps in restrooms.
  • Removes graffiti promptly using appropriate chemicals.
  • Assists in moving heavy items such as furniture, exam tables, and cabinets in patient care areas.
  • Washes and disinfects discharge and transfer beds, bedside tables, stands, mattresses, and other patient care equipment.
  • Removes and hangs cubicle and shower curtains.
  • Cleans isolation rooms according to hospital and department-specific protocols for contamination, understanding and distinguishing isolation room placards.
  • Don PPE for protection from transmittable diseases, viruses, and harmful bacteria.
  • Uses special safety techniques and materials for cleaning the Operating Room Suite, Labor/Delivery Room, Nursery, Obstetric Unit, Intensive Care Units, dental, laboratory, and medical imaging areas.
  • Performs terminal cleaning of rooms, including postmortem procedures and body holding areas, when requested.
  • Assures segregation of regular waste and regulated medical waste (RMW), including sharps.
  • Properly transports RMW in accordance with OSHA and hospital Infection Control Policies to storage areas.
  • Follows policy on Standard Precautions when removing soiled linen.
  • Transports clean linen from the linen supply room to patient wards.
  • Gathers soiled linen bags from patient rooms and transports them to the soiled linen area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
