About The Position

The City of Pleasanton is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Environmental Services Specialist to join their Environmental Services Division, with a primary focus on environmental compliance. In this role, the Specialist will lead efforts under the City’s Sewer Pipe Blockage Program by conducting facility inspections, collecting samples, preparing reports, educating food service establishments on best management practices, and enforcing municipal code requirements. The position also offers the opportunity to cross-train in other key areas such as stormwater compliance, hazardous materials management, and spill response, providing a well-rounded foundation in environmental services. This is a unique chance to help rebuild a critical environmental program while working as part of a small, supportive, and mission-driven team committed to protecting public health, the environment, and City infrastructure. Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in physical science, engineering, environmental science, biology, or a related field, or an Associate of Arts degree plus five years of work experience in a position and field with direct relevance to duties described herein.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required.
  • Work in all weather conditions.
  • Stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.
  • Walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Bend, twist, stoop, squat, and crawl to inspect facilities.
  • Hold/manipulate equipment necessary to complete assigned work.
  • Grasp devices including steel bars to lift manhole covers.
  • Lift and carry sampling equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • Wear required safety equipment.
  • Work while exposed to dust, dirt, noise, moving traffic and its exhaust fumes, paint, epoxy, asphalt, smoke fumes, herbicides / pesticides, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Public sector experience
  • Certification and/or training in landscape irrigation auditing, storm water inspections, FOG inspections, and/or water-efficient landscaping practices are highly desirable.
  • Certified to perform landscape irrigation audits by an accredited academic institution, a professional trade organization or other program such as the US Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense irrigation auditor certification program and Irrigation Association’s Certified Landscape Irrigator program within one year of hire (Water Conservation).
  • Backflow tester certification is required within two years of hire, and subsequent Cross-Connection Specialist certification (Water Conservation).
  • A "California UST System Operator" certificate issued by the International Code Council (ICC) within one year of hire (Environmental Compliance).

Responsibilities

  • Leading the City’s Sewer Pipe Blockage through inspections, sampling, reporting, and education
  • Enforcing municipal code and regulatory requirements, including follow-up inspections and enforcement actions
  • Maintaining accurate records of inspections and compliance activities
  • Cross-training in stormwater inspections, hazardous materials management, spill response, and other environmental services duties
