About The Position

We are seeking a motivated Environmental Resource Management Intern to join our team at GM Fort Wayne Assembly in Fort Wayne, IN. In this role, you will support waste and byproduct management programs, strengthen compliance activities, and help build digital tools that improve accuracy, visibility, and efficiency across our environmental systems. This internship offers hands-on exposure to industrial waste management, regulatory compliance, and digitalization efforts within a large-scale manufacturing environment.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Sustainability, or a related discipline.
  • Interest in waste management, environmental compliance, or sustainability in industrial/manufacturing settings.
  • Strong data and documentation skills, including proficiency with: Microsoft Excel (sorting/filtering, lookups, basic formulas, charts). Microsoft Word/PowerPoint for procedures and visual documentation.
  • Ability to learn and follow corporate and regulatory waste requirements.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy when reviewing procedures, checklists, and forms.
  • Strong written communication and comfort working with cross‑functional teams (operations, EHS, maintenance, suppliers).
  • Self‑motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks with guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Review and update waste characterizations for all site waste streams, with priority given to hazardous waste, hazardous secondary material, universal waste, exempt waste, and non‑hazardous waste. Document all updates in approved site formats and systems to support operations, EHS, and Resource Management teams.
  • Review existing Task Instruction Sheet documents related to waste handling, storage, inspections, and shipments. Validate and update risk assessments, task steps, and accuracy of visual aids (photos, diagrams, labels).
  • Assist with preparing and tracking Supplier Practical Problem-Solving requests for non‑compliant shipping aids (e.g., resin identification codes, LDPE usage). Gather and organize examples, including photos, part numbers, and supplier information.
  • Support the development of a system to track waste containers from empty to in‑use to shipment. Map current workflows and identify key data fields (location, contents, status, dates, responsible area, etc.). Prototype tracking digital tools using Excel, SharePoint, Microsoft Lists, or simple applications and test with pilot areas.
  • Help design a digital inspection process for Satellite Accumulation Areas, including required fields, pass/fail criteria, and escalation triggers. Research and propose Near Field Communication (NFC) or Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies to enable check‑in at inspection locations. Support pilot setup, including tagging, form configuration, reporting, and user feedback collection.
