The Environmental Services Technician is responsible for maintaining a safe and sanitary environment in patient/resident rooms and assigned areas for patients/residents, visitors and associates by following infection control, safety, and procedural guidelines. Tasks include emptying waste baskets, sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, or polishing floors, using brooms, mops, or powered scrubbing and waxing machines. The role requires demonstrating knowledge of housekeeping processes, tools, and techniques in a healthcare environment to provide a clean and sterile environment. Cleaning may occur in patient/resident rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, locker rooms, and other work areas. The technician must wear proper protective equipment, keep storage and equipment tidy, and may use pagers and other technology. Assisting in laundry areas and potentially using technology applications are also part of the role. Physical activities include considerable use of arms and legs, moving the whole body through climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, twisting, squatting, and handling materials. The ability to lift and/or move up to 40-50lbs and push/pull variable weight limits is necessary. The position requires being on feet for the majority of the shift and may involve exposure to noise from equipment. Work hours may vary depending on patient/resident needs, including overtime, call, backup call, nights, days, weekends, and holidays.
