About The Position

UPMC Altoona is seeking a full-time Environmental Services Assistant to work a night shift, 40 hours per week. This role is part of an Off-Shift Program that offers a differential for off-shift hours worked. Participants must commit to working maximum budgeted shifts as off-shift hours and maintain performance standards. New employees can enter the program at the time of hire. Resigning or being removed from the program results in a one-year re-entry waiting period. Steady night shifts are required to receive the additional differential. Medical benefits, STD, LTD, PTO, and tuition reimbursement are not impacted by this program.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED preferred.
  • Prior training in institutional cleaning desired but not necessary.
  • Previous experience in similar work preferred.
  • Must be able to lift and handle heavy to light loads by pushing or pulling refuse carts and electric or battery powered equipment.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, push, pull, or crawl.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Act 34 clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior training in institutional cleaning.
  • Previous experience in similar work.

Responsibilities

  • Operates all departmental equipment safely, orderly, and efficiently, maintaining equipment before storage.
  • Climbs ladders to hang drapes or reach areas for cleaning/disinfecting.
  • Cleans and services hospital building areas, moves furniture, equipment, and supplies to maintain a sanitary condition.
  • Washes walls, ceilings, and inside windows by hand or machine; may wash outside windows and screens.
  • Gathers and disposes of refuse; washes and relines wastebaskets and refuse containers.
  • Cleans light fixtures, tops of windows, door frames, and other high places using ladders or scaffolds.
  • Moves equipment, furniture, and files as requested by supervision.
  • Uses chemicals safely and efficiently according to guidelines, wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Disinfects areas by scrubbing and spraying with approved germicide cleaner.
  • Terminally cleans and disinfects patient rooms, isolation rooms, floors, beds, restrooms, furniture, and equipment after patient transfer or discharge.
  • Collects all regular and infectious waste according to established guidelines.
  • Scours, polishes, and washes sinks, tubs, mirrors, and other plumbing fixtures.
  • Cleans water coolers and replaces disposables like towels, soap, and toilet tissue.
  • Performs daily and routine quality checks and makes necessary improvements.
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and wet scrubs floors, halls, and stairways.
  • Receives daily assignments and supplies, transports them to the work area, and returns unused supplies at the end of the shift.
  • Performs repetitive tasks to maintain assigned areas in a sanitary, orderly, and attractive condition.
  • Assembles necessary cleaning supplies and equipment for transport to the assigned work area.
  • Makes discharge beds with clean linen.
  • Requests help for heavy furniture or equipment moves, notifies supervisor of low supplies, and reports mechanical failures or conditions in assigned areas.
