About The Position

The Department of Environmental Quality/Office of Environmental Services has a vacancy. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection in order to promote and protect health, safety and welfare. The Water Permits Division protects water quality and public health by issuing permits that regulate discharges into state waters in compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s delegated Louisiana Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (LPDES) program. As an Environmental Scientist, you will ensure that these facility permits implement the proper limits, monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting requirements in accordance with State environmental laws and LPDES program regulations. This role directly impacts the quality of Louisiana waters, as well as offers the opportunity for professional growth.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field; OR A master’s degree or doctorate in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scientific and technical work for statewide water permitting.
  • Review and develop documentation for individual and general water permits.
  • Focus primarily on processing non-storm water discharge permits.
  • Evaluate small discharges with low potential environmental impacts.
  • Collaborate within the Water Permits Division on master permit authorizations.
