About The Position

The Division of Drinking Water is looking for an Environmental Scientist to assist with technical assistance contract and provide support in areas such as emergency response planning, capacity development, compliance resolution, cross-connection control, operator certification, emerging contaminants, and cybersecurity. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series.

Requirements

  • Be able to determine Public Water System conformance with Utah regulatory requirements through the Sanitary Survey and Level 2 assessment review process.
  • Possess the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with Public Water Systems and other agencies.
  • Be able to work independently, prioritize work, and adjust quickly to changing priorities.
  • Experience identifying and analyzing underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions.
  • Be able to respond to questions or complaints, provide information, explain policy and procedures, and facilitate resolution of deficiencies.
  • Be able to develop and conduct education and outreach to increase awareness of drinking water regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference may be given to those with a Bachelors of Science degree plus five (5) years of full-time paid professional employment directly related to drinking water treatment and/or distribution protection and environmental regulatory activities, OR an equivalent combination of related education and paid professional employment directly related to the above tasks.
  • Preference may also be given to individuals with a valid Utah Distribution and/or Treatment Operator Certification.
  • Have knowledge of drinking water utility regulations and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections of public water systems throughout the state of Utah requiring occasional overnight travel.
  • Conduct onsite assessments of Utah’s Public Water Systems to identify existing or potential sanitary risks, and evaluate the adequacy of the system, its sources, operations, and the distribution of safe drinking water.
  • Conduct Level 2 Assessments of public water systems.
  • Provide support for the Emergency Response program.
  • Provide technical assistance for emergency response, cyber security and water system operations.
