About The Position

This is for a casual, as needed position in our San Jose, California office. The role of the Environmental Scientist is to perform tasks associated with environmental assessments, hydrogeological studies, subsurface investigations, and monitoring projects; aquatic and terrestrial species, vegetation, sediment, and surface water; oversight of subcontractors; production of maps; data interpretation/evaluation and deliverable preparation. The position requires strict adherence to health and safety procedures, attention to detail, good work ethic, and a passion for high quality workmanship. Candidate must have excellent communication and organizational skills, combined with the ability and flexibility to work in a dynamic, challenging and fast paced environment. Must pass Department of Defense background check for base access. Prior to employment with Stantec a successful passing of a physical and drug/alcohol screen will be required. Majority of time spent in office environment with prolonged sitting and computer work, or combination of office and field.

Requirements

  • Proficient in policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training.
  • Solid skills in technical writing.
  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.
  • At least one year of experience successfully executing technical aspects of small to medium projects.
  • Ability to travel for extended field work.
  • Experience in routine groundwater and soil sampling procedures.
  • BS in Biology, Engineering, Environmental Sciences or related Earth Sciences.
  • Minimum 1-5 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with construction oversight, remediation system operation and maintenance activities a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks associated with environmental assessments, hydrogeological studies, subsurface investigations, and monitoring projects.
  • Conduct studies related to aquatic and terrestrial species, vegetation, sediment, and surface water.
  • Provide oversight of subcontractors.
  • Produce maps.
  • Perform data interpretation/evaluation and deliverable preparation.
  • Apply technical and business knowledge and methods to develop creative, effective, and economical solutions to address current and potential project issues.
  • Conduct and/or lead field work including GPS surveys, aquatic and terrestrial species studies, vegetation, wetland delineations, sample collection, and construction oversight.
  • Prepare project deliverables including safety plans and notifications, sampling and analysis plans, technical reports, and maps.
  • Perform technical analysis and reporting.
  • Draft technical reports including data entry/validation, figure preparation, and QA/QC.
  • Develop tables and figures using analytical data and topographic/site maps.
  • Ensure QA/QC and H&S requirements and procedures are identified and followed throughout a project's life cycle.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors (such as analytical laboratories, private locators, and drillers) while performing office assignments.
  • Identify project-specific environmental regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with resource agency personnel.
  • Write and review technical reports.
  • Develop environmental permit applications.
  • Present at public meetings.
  • Facilitate successful environmental permitting of multiple and varied projects.
  • Apply established practices, standards and guidelines.
  • Perform task management for sites undergoing assessment and/or active remediation.
  • Participate in proposal preparation (work scope, task-level budgeting, cost estimates).
  • Perform calculations, gather or review information, or prepare standard sections of proposals.
