About The Position

The Utah Division of Water Rights is offering a unique and exciting opportunity to help address Utah's water challenges by assisting in modernizing the management of water diversion and water use data. The Data Services Section seeks an environmental scientist to manage the quality of Utah’s diversion and water use data, which will inform water management and planning in the State for decades to come. The scientist will create and implement quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) procedures over time. This position will work under the supervision of the Water Use Program Manager.

Requirements

  • Has a background in hydroinformatics or experience in data management and software, and an understanding of statistics, hydrology, geology, and water management.
  • Experience working Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Highly motivated to help effectively manage and preserve Utah’s water resources.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history check.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference may be given to applicants with a bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, natural science, technical writing, or a related field.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with professional work experience in Water Rights.

Responsibilities

  • Create, implement, and monitor quality control procedures and regular reviews on collected time series water diversion and water use data.
  • Coordinate with staff, distribution systems commissioners, water users, and water districts on water diversion and use data quality matters.
  • Assist the Water Use Program Manager by coordinating with water use systems to collect their data and update their service area boundaries. This assistance includes mailing late notice letters and scheduling field visits for the Water Use Program Manager.
