About The Position

The Excess Soils Specialist is a mid-level technical role focused on the assessment, management, and coordination of excess soils for major urban transit infrastructure projects in Hamilton, ON, Canada. This position operates within a multidisciplinary environmental and engineering team, contributing to the planning, investigation, and implementation of excess soils management strategies aligned with project specifications, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. The role supports large-scale construction activities and ensures soil characterization, reuse, and disposal are effectively managed throughout project delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Geology, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5–8 years of experience relevant to the tasks described, including work on major transportation or linear infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with: Excess soils management and Ontario excess soils regulations
  • Demonstrated experience with: Soil characterization, sampling, and classification
  • Demonstrated experience with: Development of reuse and disposal strategies
  • Demonstrated experience with: Preparation of excess soils documentation (e.g., ESDAR, SAP, etc.)
  • Experience supporting or leading field investigation programs.
  • Working knowledge of Ontario regulatory frameworks and excess soils requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional designation as P.Geo., P.Eng., or eligible for registration (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Review existing environmental investigations and reports, identify data gaps and commitments, and support development of DD&I scope, plans, and schedules.
  • Lead or support DD&I field programs, including soil characterization and sampling activities, and oversee field teams completing investigation work and reporting.
  • Prepare and contribute to Excess Soils Management Plan documentation, including APU, SAP, SCR, and ESDAR deliverables.
  • Support development and implementation of excess soils management plans, including reuse strategies and off-site disposal requirements.
  • Coordinate with field teams, contractors, and multidisciplinary stakeholders to manage soil handling, tracking, and compliance.
  • Assist in ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and project permitting strategies related to excess soils.
