About The Position

The mission of the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) is to improve the quality of life for all Kentuckians by protecting our land, air, and water resources by utilizing our natural resources in an environmentally conscientious manner. By joining the Division of Waste Management, Field Operations Branch, Frankfort Section as an Environmental Scientist Advisor in Franklin county, you will have the opportunity to inspect Underground Storage Tank (UST), Solid Waste, and Hazardous Waste facilities regulated by the Division of Waste Management (DWM) to determine compliance with the environmental laws and regulations for the avoidance and minimization of environmental impacts and make recommendations based on findings as necessary. Requirements

  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and work in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time.
  • Be exposed to dangerous work conditions and rough terrain.
  • Ability to communicate with people in person and by other means of electronic technology.
  • Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.
  • Five years of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.
  • Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Communication skills.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects at once and completing within specific deadlines.
  • Experience with computer software, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams.
  • Prefer experience with TEMPO database and KHRIS time system.
  • Experience with Inspections at Solid Waste, Hazardous Waste, and Underground Storage Tank Facilities is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical advisor responsible for implementing Division of Waste Management programs and guidelines.
  • Evaluate permits, projects, authorizations and applications to determine compliance with existing regulations.
  • Perform technical and scientific environmental inspections and investigations.
  • Prepare technical reports and guidance documents related to DWM programs.
  • Provide technical advice to the Branch and Division management concerning DWM programs.
