Environmental Protection Specialist

Auburn University•Fort Benning, GA

About The Position

The Environmental Protection Specialist supports the IGSA with Fort Benning, working with environmental professionals, facility personnel, and operational units to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promote environmental stewardship and workplace safety. The role combines fieldwork, training, problem-solving, relationship building, and administrative program management across multiple environmental compliance programs. The specialist conducts inspections across diverse facilities, provides technical guidance and training, supports environmental emergency response, and collaborates with stakeholders throughout the installation. Candidates must successfully obtain a Common Access Card (CAC) to access the government network. Because the federal government manages the CAC process and it may take time, the probationary period may be extended; failure to obtain the CAC may result in termination. Applicants are required to upload a cover letter. The position is offered at one of three qualification levels. Level I requires a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience, an associate’s degree and two years of experience, or a bachelor’s degree. Level II requires a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience, an associate’s degree and four years of experience, or a bachelor’s degree and two years of experience. Level III requires a high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of experience, an associate’s degree and six years of experience, or a bachelor’s degree and four years of experience. Experience developing and administering environmental compliance programs—such as hazardous waste, clean water, clean air, or storage tank management—is required. The role manages an annual workload of more than 580 environmental inspections and compliance assessments across programs including HWMP, HM, UST/AST, MCoE SIP, SPCC, and IGP. The position is a limited-term role. Auburn describes its workplace as supportive of work/life balance and offers benefits and educational opportunities.
