About The Position

The primary mission of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is to provide science-based environmental stewardship for the health and prosperity of all North Carolinians. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is the lead stewardship agency for the protection of North Carolina's environmental resources. The purpose of this position is to supervise environmental specialists performing inspections of UST facilities to ensure compliance with UST operating permit requirements. The position is responsible for coordinating all inspection activities, ensuring that inspection goals are accomplished and that inspections are performed properly and consistently across the state. The Environmental Supervisor will be responsible for meeting DEQ and EPA inspection and enforcement requirements and for assisting the Branch Head by designing and carrying out leak prevention studies. The Environmental Supervisor will be responsible for hiring and training all new inspectors, drafting and reviewing work plans, approving timesheets and addressing technical and personnel issues. In addition, the Environmental Supervisor will be responsible for seeing that all inspectors receive appropriate health and safety training and perform their job in accordance with this training. If necessary, this position will be expected to serve as an expert witness in administrative hearings involving UST technical requirements. In addition, this position will be required to provide technical assistance to the regulated community, the general public, UST contractors and other interested parties through written correspondence, telephone discussions or through face-to-face meetings or formal presentations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in environmental work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
