The primary mission of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is to provide science-based environmental stewardship for the health and prosperity of all North Carolinians. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is the lead stewardship agency for the protection of North Carolina's environmental resources. The organization, which has offices from the mountains to the coast, administers regulatory programs designed to protect air quality, water quality, and the public's health, and works to advance in all-of-the-above energy strategy that fits North Carolina's needs. DEQ also offers technical assistance to businesses, farmers, local governments, and the public and encourages responsible behavior with respect to the environment through education programs provided at DEQ facilities and through the state's school system. DEQ touches the lives of all North Carolinians in many ways to enhance and ensure our quality of life. The purpose of this position is to supervise environmental specialists performing inspections of UST facilities to ensure compliance with UST operating permit requirements. The position is responsible for coordinating all inspection activities, ensuring that inspection goals are accomplished and that inspections are performed properly and consistently across the state. The Environmental Supervisor will be responsible for meeting DEQ and EPA inspection and enforcement requirements and for assisting the Branch Head by designing and carrying out leak prevention studies. The Environmental Supervisor will be responsible for hiring and training all new inspectors, drafting and reviewing work plans, approving timesheets and addressing technical and personnel issues. In addition, the Environmental Supervisor will be responsible for seeing that all inspectors receive appropriate health and safety training and perform their job in accordance with this training. If necessary, this position will be expected to serve as an expert witness in administrative hearings involving UST technical requirements. In addition, this position will be required to provide technical assistance to the regulated community, the general public, UST contractors and other interested parties through written correspondence, telephone discussions or through face-to-face meetings or formal presentations.
