About The Position

The Environmental Program Supervisor I position serves as Regional Supervisor for the Eastern Unit of the Inactive Hazardous Sites Branch. The position supervises the technical project management and work allocation of the Eastern Unit staff and conducts the administrative functions of the Unit, Branch, Section, Division and Department, including staff recruitment, retention, and performance management. The Unit Supervisor is responsible for providing guidance and review of staff’s technical work and decision-making, which includes planning and reviewing remedial actions, prioritizing sites according to their risks, enforcement of parties responsible, and communicating with municipalities, environmental consulting firms, the public, interest groups, organizations, and the Division. The Unit Supervisor will develop and maintain processes to optimize staff time related to the use of state remediation funds to ensure progress and cost-effective use of the fund. The Unit Supervisor will review the incoming work in a timely manner to determine which staff resources are best applied to handling the tasks and track progress and status of staff assignments through routine review of tracking tools and discussions with staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in environmental work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Allocate work among staff and provide guidance on technical management of projects.
  • Review work for technical accuracy and completeness, adherence to agency regulations and policy, and ensure decisions are consistently rendered.
  • Respond with courtesy and tact to public and stakeholder inquiries pertaining to sites, situations or regulations and assist staff in responding to these inquiries.
  • Provide recommendations and support to the Branch Head for needed modifications to rules, policy, guidance, data tracking, website content, and template documents.
  • Implement DEQ administrative duties including timesheets, training, contracts, staff performance requirements, approvals, and other human resources requirements.
