About The Position

The Environmental Operator is responsible for the operation, light maintenance, and control of systems, processes, machinery, and equipment for environmental pollution control, wastewater treatment plants, and process/potable water treatment plants. This role ensures compliance with all state and federal environmental laws, permits, and regulations. It is integral to the implementation of the Environmental Program in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and Company requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and completion of training or course in the operation of wastewater treatment plants category IV and potable water treatment plants category I.
  • Associate's Degree in Natural Sciences, Engineering, or Industrial Mechanics.
  • License: Wastewater treatment plant operator IV and potable water treatment plant operator I.
  • Two to four years of experience as a wastewater treatment plant operator IV and one to three years of experience as a potable water treatment plant operator I.
  • Knowledge and experience in Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and utility operations in an industrial environment.

  • Electrician license (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Operates and controls process water, wastewater treatment plants, and pump stations, ensuring compliance with applicable permit requirements.
  • Monitors industrial discharges and takes appropriate actions to maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Company requirements.
  • Controls operations and monitors system and equipment performance through computerized systems and metrics. Performs complex troubleshooting to maintain operations and prevent interruptions.
  • Possesses knowledge in the operation of utility systems, with an emphasis on water reuse systems and chemical treatment of water for boilers and cooling towers.
  • Collects grab and composite samples and performs physical and chemical analyses to make appropriate adjustments in daily operations.
  • Collects grab and composite samples and coordinates analyses for reports required by permits.
  • Prepares, compiles, documents, archives, and maintains required analysis logs, flow readings, and daily event logs. Analyzes data and takes action as required to maintain operations.
  • Prepares and adds reagents to process water and wastewater treatment plants as necessary for their operation.
  • Maintains an inventory of reagents and ensures the necessary quantity is always available for the operation of the treatment plants. Stores reagents according to company requirements.
  • Prepares purchase order requisitions and/or refers for the purchase of reagents, materials, and services necessary to perform their duties and follows up on them.
  • Establishes contact with suppliers and obtains quotes for reagents, materials, tools, services, etc.
  • Coordinates sludge removal services, sample collection, calibrations, etc., to maintain compliance and proper functioning of the treatment plants.
  • Verifies instrument calibrations and standardizes and cleans instruments according to the required frequency.
  • Collects data from pollutant generation sources and environmental pollution control equipment.
  • Performs light maintenance on equipment and instruments in the area. Ensures assigned tools are kept in good condition.
  • Maintains their work area and surroundings clean and organized.
  • Provides technical assistance to other areas and to personnel contracted by the Company.
  • Maintains effective communication with customers. Prepares shift reports following company-defined standards.
  • Ensures specifications for parts, products, projects, and services include environmental considerations and considers efficiency and energy conservation when selecting new equipment.
  • Participates in and promotes activities with the Operational Excellence Team focused on continuous improvement (5’s, workplace audits, T cards, Idea cards, Big C, Tip Plan, Communication Center, etc.).
