About The Position

This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the Safe Drinking Water Fund. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter (continuous renewal). Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds. The Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Office of Drinking Water (ODW), is seeking an Environmental Health Technical Specialist to join the Culpeper Field Office team! This is an exciting opportunity to have an immediate impact on an office filled with passionate public health professionals dedicated to ensuring Virginians are provided with safe and reliable drinking water. This position is located in downtown Culpeper and will assist in ensuring safe drinking water for citizens in the Culpeper Field Office service area. Requirements

  • Working knowledge of biology, microbiology, chemistry, and math
  • Working knowledge of technology associated with provision of drinking water
  • Ability to use computers for word processing and data management
  • Ability to communicate in English in writing, orally, interpersonally, and before groups and public meetings
  • Ability to interpret regulations and technical documents
  • Experience leading a project or team

Nice To Haves

  • Experience conducting sanitary surveys or environmental risk assessments.
  • Knowledge of SDWA and Virginia Waterworks Regulations.
  • Ability to manage a regulatory program.
  • Licensure as a Class 3, 2, or 1 Waterworks Operator by the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation.

Responsibilities

  • Protects public health by ensuring that public drinking water from groundwater and consecutive water sources is in compliance with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Virginia Waterworks Regulations.
  • Conducts sanitary surveys.
  • Reviews operating reports.
  • Investigates consumer complaints.
  • Prepares violation notices.
  • Initiates enforcement actions.
  • Manages databases.
  • Evaluates water quality data.
  • Provides technical assistance and training to waterworks owners/operators.
  • Serves as noncommunity waterworks program supervisor and subject matter expert for the entire field office, by providing technical and procedural guidance and quality assurance reviews.
